Just got hit with a huge storm and hail. Power is out. Lightening hit real close and was the loudest noise I think I've ever heard. Tripped some breakers outside but resetting them didn't turn power back on

Crap. I have a recycling center drop-off appointment at 4. I hope this band moves past us by then.

Stay safe. No surfing in low-water crossings!

It has passed. And now it's blue skies to the west and south. Real dark to the east and north. So effing strange.

One of my GFCI circuits is clicking nonstop now. Gonna have to go get another one looks like

Anyone have a good place to go to for a ceramic coat here in Austin? Feeling lazy.

A little something every chance we get.
And I got back to Lockhart in time for our storm. A lot of bluster, some bright flashes, and.......0.01".

Sitrep from the lightening strike. Here is the current damage list:

7, in ceiling led can lights
2, light bulbs in ceiling fans upstairs
1, garage door obstruction beam thingy
    1, GFCI outlet (already replaced)
And my AC won't turn off nor will the fan stop blowing

Close all the panel breakers, then kill the whole house breaker (on the outside, by the meter). Wait a couple minutes for things to cool off, then flip the house breaker back on. Bring the individual panel breakers on one at a time. If you don’t reset the whole-house GFCI you can at least isolate if any of those got cooked.

Because odds are one of them might be.

    Sorry brother.

Awesome Cap, I'll try this right now. I've never had this much damage from a storm before.

Oh and I forgot, my automatically opening trash can is shot too

Either your whole-home GFCI is fried or you took a lightning hit and got off lucky.

If it was a hit, I recommend adding a surge arrestor into the patch panel. You might also want to upgrade your home’s ground - it obviously didn’t do you any good. Then again, our soil is absolute garbage. Clay and limestone are horrible for sinking ground rods.

Winter sucked, spring has not been awesome. Can’t wait to see what summer brings. 110* for a month straight?

I’ve now rearranged our 2-car garage to fit my truck and wifey’s van. about 10mins of shuffling stuff around (mostly putting totes into the bed of the truck), and they’ll slide right in. It’s tight. And my truck clears by less than 2”.

    But it’s safe from hail.

    Update;

    2 GFCi outlets, both replaced.
2 Amazon fire tv sticks but these don't matter. They are trash compared to the Roku.
Also lost a homebase device for some of my cameras
And the driveway floodlight cam device too.

Luckily both those last items are under warranty.

Aaaaaaaaaand lost my indoor bike trainer and one of it's accessories. I'm most bummed about this. Going to pack these things up and take them back to REI tomorrow. Luckily they are still under return timeframe.

I'd recommend a good electrician if I knew any. I know lots of guys with burned fingers and frizzy hair - I don't think that's the kind of "pro" that you need.

Could have been a lot worse - no fire. Glad you're okay. AND OF COURSE BIG PERM!!

Last month I got nailed by lightning. Took out my outside house to shop link. From that box (inside a window) every Ethernet-connected device got fried. Wifi, routers, pfsense box, spectrum modem. Thankfully computers serviced. Every unit has its own UPS and surge suppressor but still interesting how the energy traveled into and through the house.

I was outside carrying in our five-gallon water jugs. Bottled water for drinking for us and the dogs, well has very high salt content. Got in four jugs, went back out for the fifth. I squatted and stood back up. Hair on my body stood went on end, sounded like frying bacon in my ears, and zero time to react. Flash and boom simultaneously. I came to under my truck! The outside modem was about 3' from my head. A bit stunned, but nothing made any sense. Heart rate went to 200 bpm and stayed there for 10 minutes, but no burn nor scorch marks. Too stunned to get my truck into the garage, hence pummeled by hail. I think I've used up my nine lives!

Still need to get the roof replaced. $4000 deductible, but between $1000 in electronics and $25,000 (?) roof at least helps offset. I had about $25,000 in damage to the pool during our winter freeze, with zero coverage. Sigh. At least we were declared a disaster area, so I can take that off my tax liability. It's been a crazy year!
