    Does anyone know if there is an easy way to check rear brakes without pulling the drum off? I'm starting to hear something sound funky like a light scrape/squeak as the tire goes around on the rear passenger side I think.

    Check the ebrake cable where it attaches to the brake drum. If you have any movement you may need new shoes. I had 275,000 on my 5lug axle and never changed the shoes.

    Cool that conversion gives what I want (I think) where RPM x displacement / 231 =GPM

    So having my gear pump with a fixed displacement of .56 in^3 at 1700rpm would yield 4.12GPM. Which coincides with my test stand flow meter reading 4GPM. Therefore with science I can prove my boss bought the wrong pump and it's not something in my plumbing or valve body causing it to underperform


    He wants 12GPM:laughing:

    Sounds right to me. That seems like wayyy too small a pump to make use of the power of the motor though and that is where my knowledge ends

    Doing the opposite math shows that I need a displacement of 1.63 in^3 to achieve 12GPM at 1700rpm. Going through Casappa data sheets they make that exact pump so now I can offer bossman a solution on how we can fix the output without having to run through a shitload of unnecessary tests just because "he needs to see it with his own eyes"

    You kinda need a mix of all three, depends entirely on what part you're working on. In my experience buy a complete deep set and then buy regular or shallow independently, depending on when you run into needing em

    Regretfully we have a customer that was chomping at the bit for a dual circuit pump that could run off either an aux tank or the one apart of the powerpak. He told casappa to just send us what they had in stock because their build time leads were way too long. Not the first time he's shotgun blasted a solution but normally we can pull something out of our assets to make what he buys work.

    This is not one of those times lol


    Thank you for your help with the maths, it's greatly appreciated

    I've gotten a ton of use out of my harbor freight, regular depth ones. The deep ones are nice too, but I'd get the regular ones first.

    The boss was in the airforce during Vietnam with the job of sneaking behind enemy lines blowing up our planes and helicopters to make sure tech didn't fall in the wrong hands.


    We've done some "iffy" things in the past to fulfill customer requests lol

    The amount of hacked together stuff that is in service all over the world is truly terrifying. And thats just the mechanical stuff, it gets nightmarish once you dive into software.

    Personally, I started with a vintage Craftsman 1/2" ratchet set (non-impact sockets) and breaker bar I got for a nice price off Craigslist and then added a deep impact socket set.

    I don't have an impact driver right now, but my thinking is that if something's too tight to fit a deep socket, the impact probably wouldn't fit anyway. There are exceptions of course, but that's what individual sockets are for :)
