Hey guys, I can probably search this but I'm looking for a quick answer.

I just got back from vacation and my place as broken into (broke a window and then entered through there). And both of my Taco keys were stolen :( I still have that one physical key that opens the driver door, but doesn't start the truck. Therefore, I can't drive it anywhere.

Can I call a local locksmith that deals with cars to get a new key reprogrammed? Or does it have to go through the dealer since I don't have a working key.
It's 2AM at the time of this post, so this is just one of the things I need to sort out. Already did a police report. Not sure why they didn't take the Taco, but I'm happy they didn't, the garage door was partially open too.

When I googled stuff earlier, all I saw was that you needed a working key to make a copy.

I'm in Westminster, CO if anyone knows anybody we deals with this.

    Thanks!

I'd call your insurance and see what they can do for you. The burglar POS will most likely be back to take the vehicle at a later time so I'd ask about getting it rekeyed along with getting the new remotes. I know with an ids you can or could remove all the previous keys from the vehicle so they are no longer usable with the vehicle so I'd look into seeing if Toyota can do that for you. Sorry your place was broken into, call your local PD and file a report also.

Only aesthetic mods so far Leer 180 cap & Clazzio covers on order.
Disable the truck ASAP. Remove the coil wire. Disconnect the battery.
Then work on the getting it re-keyed.

They knew you were gone, so they are capable of 'watching' you.

Its easier to follow you and lift the truck mid day from a HD or grocery parking lot rather than risk noise of door opening and driving off in the wee hours in case you have early rising or light sleeping neighbors.

Or they could plan on selling the keys to a more professional heister.

    Sorry for your troubles.

Agree with @CT Yankee that you should disable, but you need your insurance (homeowners likely) to guide you here. You do not want a 'replacement' setup that would allow the old keys/fobs to work, you need a fresh set up. Which won't be cheap, but that's why you have good insurance, right?

Wonder why they didn't take the truck when they took the keys at the time of the crime...
Perhaps you got back as they were in the midst and in that case things could have gone very wrong.

I concur with others to disable it while getting it sorted out, or get the cops to install a tracker on it and
    let nature take its course...

yeah, I would pull the battery out right now and then deal with getting replacement keys.

PS: this is why I keep all my spare car keys in a locked gun safe.

I’d call insurance, tow it to the dealer. Have the dealer wipe out the previously programmed keys so the thieves can’t uses the fob to unlock the vehicle or start it. Unfortunately they will be able to use the metal key to get in the door if they are smart enough to realize that. Have a new key or keys programmed. If you really are worried you could have the door locks rekeyed or changed too. It’s not gonna be cheap. That’s why you should get insurance involved

I have done security ECU reset (with a good key) to utilize 'used' keys with the truck (3rd gen) using Techstream and seed/passcode. But I THINK this is significantly harder (without a good key)...

    Assuming 2018+ is same
    MC-10143927-9999.pdf (nhtsa.gov)

Its possible the same weboctopus/seed/passcode method works for a reset (without a key) as it does with a key, but I would assume it doesnt...

another tip for the future, rent a cheap 5x5 storage unit in the middle of nowhere (should be about $20 a month)
store the spare keys there and make sure you don't have any document that can lead to your home address. Rarely do burglars go rob storage unit, and even if they do there's nothing too valuable.

Sorry to hear about the theft, I can't help unfortunately. However rather than start a new thread, hope you don't mind I post my question here... I bought a 2019 and even though it was cpo I only got 1 key that has the lock/unlock as part of the key. What do I need to do to get another key? I asked the service tech when I got fuel pump recall done but he or the guy next to him couldn't give me a straight answer or was just too lazy to look it up...

Thanks for the tips everyone! Lessons were learned

The Toyota dealership I called didn't have availability until June... So I called another and they referred me to a local guy.
Cost would be $295 per fob and then $120 to re-key the cylinder lock and they would come out to me. Based on what the dealership told me, this was much cheaper than the dealership.

Waiting to hear back form the claims adjuster to see if this would be covered under auto or renters for the parts/labor for this.

Thieves probably took your FOBs cause they were only given 1 when they bought their 21.

But for real, sorry to hear about your situation. People suck

That will be far cheaper than the dealer, but they will probably not be Toyota fob and keys, just clones, if that matters at all to you.

    A) Maybe the perpetrator was acting alone and his vehicle was parked nearby.

    B) Maybe the OP's vehicle is a stick and the perpetrator is incapable of driving it.

Believe it or not there is a Toyota smart key shortage right now. most people who bought a car after march of 2021 are only getting one smart key with a promise from toyota that they will eventually get a second remote when they become available. As a result fobs are pulling a premium right now being sold used, quick easy money and no way to tell what vehicle is was programmed to. Steal the keys and even if you dont take the truck you could make a quick couple hundred dollars selling them.

Have the dealer do it. Insurance can pay for a rental while waiting. Have all the key cylinders replaced(ignition and any doors) then program. This way all the compromised parts are new.

So now I have to lock my spare keys in a gun safe? At this rate, I'll have to buy another safe just for keys.

Do NOT go this route. Even if you get it back, it could very well get damaged; depending on the thief, they're not usually known for their tenderness on vehicles they steal.
