If it's not coming out with some force on the pry bar, turn the axle a bit and try again. You want that c-clip in just the right place for it to pop out easily.

I’m reviving this thread since it seems like autozone and Napa both carry these extended travel CVs as well. I have one coming in at NAPA to look at. My current CVs are my originals and I rebooted and rebuilt them a few years ago. They held up, but the extended travel boots did not. Any more reports on these, good or bad?

I may have about what...15k to 20k miles on them now since my boots tore and I'm reporting no weird noise or odd driving at all. That's on top of the 5k or more miles I put on them before I noticed the torn boots?

Granted I haven't gone wheeling since the end of September, but I have gone on 4-5 camping trips since then...each over 3+hrs away each way.

Kwikvette, that’s great to hear. I saw your review on the O’reilly site. I think I’ll go this route and pick up the extended travel CV from NAPA, it has to be the same MFR, same specs and same photo, and I’ll pull and reboot mine for a trail spare.

I ended up with one from O’reilly’s because NAPA either sold the one out from under me that they ordered for me or could not find it. Everything is going smooth except as others have pointed out, getting these in without a lip to put a crow bar on and seat it is proving to be a huge PITA. I can get it to the first stop and then nothing. Just venting. Taking a break.Tried lining it up straight, tapping with a rubber mallet at the end. It’s not budging.

Did you grease the splines at all?

As stated, did you grease them?

Also, make sure that little C clip from your old CV axle came out otherwise it might be stuck in there.

    Mine seated easily by hand.

Yup, grease on the spline, old clip is on the old CV and I have tried clip up, clip down, shake it all around, hokey pokey…LOL. I’m having a beer and then I’m going back out to just keep rotating it and trying again. I never had this much of an issue with other CVs, but they all had a lip to bang on. Thanks for the tips. It will go in eventually.

I have never used the lip anyways…hold axle straight and use a mallet on the threaded side. Goes right in.

Thread the axle nut on the end to protect the threads and then hammer it home. When we did @Kwikvette 's axle seal a couple months ago this same CV axle went in nice and easy that way.

For me getting them out is the hard part when there's no good place to put a pry bar on

Or in my case when we found out we can just yank the CV axle out by hand

I keep mixing this thread up with the other one; the other thread has slightly more specific info about these axles and updates.

I let it sit for a day and did my 24 hour shift. I came back, determined to get it in, and I did. Quite easily, so I will share what I did, in case anyone else has this issue. I almost replaced the C clip with the old one since I read that it was most likely the clip causing the issue, but I decided to try everything again and add in the the “slide pull technique”. I dunked the end in some grease and then rotated the clip with the open end down, but centered and not hanging. I lined up the CV and after a few pushes, it went to the first “stop” as it had been doing previously. I kept the cv straight and basically did a “slide pull” type action and it popped right in! I’ll test drive it tomorrow.

    Glad it went in!

Though I'm not sure what the difference is that you did? Just need to push it in.

Sounds like the C clip was the in the perfect spot, the grease he put on there too likely helped
