Back end submerged, should I be worried?

Hello all, noob here looking for advice. I recently took my Tacoma off roading and attempted to cross what I thought was a shallow body of water. Turns out that 2/3rds of the way across there was a hole and shelf that I didn't know was there, and my back end was stuck and submerged for about 2 hours until friendly locals pulled us out with their tractor.

My question is, is there anything I should be worried or checking for since the incident?

We pulled it out and everything seems to work and run fine, with the exception of my park assist and blind spot sensors not functioning (but I'm hoping those will dry out and return to normal as this all happened a few hours ago).

My engine was bone dry as we moved through quickly until the rear wheels got stuck, and just a little water got into the back of the cabin under the back seats, so hoping theres no real damage due to my lousy judgement.

    Thanks in advance!

Drain/fill rear diff fluid and call it good.

That is deep. Check the engine air filter. If it's wet, don't run the engine. Might need a rear diff fluid drain and fill. Good luck.

Thanks guys. Yeah, it was deep and was a shock for sure. I'll be getting my 60k mile service soon so I'll mention the differential fluid drain and fill. I think that's part of the service if I recall correctly, at least a check is anyway... Appreciate the feedback!

Breather relocate mod if you want to be able to keep crossing water like that.

    the good ones
If everything electrical is working you only have to change the rear diff fluid. You can also relocate the diff breather higher up so it's not an issue next time, easy DIY

Lol, I think I'm good. I learned my lesson and won't be trying that again. I walked out half way across inspecting it, it was really shallow until that opened up. The locals said they've pulled out several trucks there bc the drop is deceiving.

It's in Ocala National Forrest off of 42, so if anyone's riding out there be weary of the water.

Next time I'm walking the whole way

Good to know I'm just south of Ocala and have been wanting to ride up there. Looks like someone in the passenger seat is hiding their face from the photo in embarrassment:anonymous:

Lucky it wasnt the front that dropped in.

I would occasionally check wheel and carrier bearings. They might need replacing soon-ish.

Agreed. Better safe than sorry if there's water in the gear oil. It's really easy to do at home. Just takes a wrench, flat surface, and some RTV sealant to put the diff cover back on.

Old gear oil smells like absolute death though, so you've got that to look forward to!

+1 for doing the fluid change right away!

It's cheap and easy. Anyone with a socket set and a drain pan can do it.
