    Just 3 tons of fun!!!

Tomorrow is going to be a long day. Around 11 hours, because we aren't taking the direct route.

the next day is only going to be about 7.5 because we're only going to Hot Springs AR. That's where I spent most of my summers as a kid. I want to show the wife some of that Country.

Then it'll be about a 13 hour drive through Dodge City Kansas, to see my cousins in Ft Collins CO.

Then about 10 hours up to Northern Utah.

Then about 11 hours home to Cen Cal

The farmhouse (center) actually stood during the Battles of Manassas. The Confederates signaled from there to the hilltop we are standing on, and on further down the ridge.

awesome looking trip, but you did break my cardianl rule of road trips, which is avoid driving the long way through Nebraska at all costs. If you ever do it again, I highly recommend a michigan going north through upper michigan, then wisconsin, minnesota, south dakota, wyoming route. slower highways through upper michigan, but a great way to see a lot of variation in your landscapes.

Well, I started this, so I'd better finish it. Jen was taking almost all of the pictures, so it made it a bit of a pain in the ass to try and keep up on posting during the trip.

But here is day one's itinerary.

We left Haymarket VA headed for Huntington WV... where crossed the Ohio river and entered OH for a little side trip. This route also kept us on 2 lane roads for the vast majority of the day (which is what I wanted).

We crossed over in to Ohio just to check it off.

We headed off towards Louisville. Then we crossed over in to Indiana... from Kentucky... and came back.

We tried to get close enough to take a picture of (arguably) the most haunted building in the Western Hemisphere... Waverly Hills Sanitarium... but this is as close as you get.

    20210519_210435.jpg

Then we headed to Nashville to stay the night. Really, the only freeway we hit... and damn near all of it was under construction.

We did not go through Nebraska. We changed our course mid stream. I'll explain that when I get to day 3 of the cross country part of the trip.

    Here is day 2s map.

    Screenshot_20210530-142914_Maps.jpg

Nashville TN up through the Land Between the Lakes... to a podunk town (Metropolis) in Illinois... just to have Jen be able to say she's been in Illinois. Then across the Mississippi in to Missouri down through Blytheville Arkansas and in to Hot Springs AR.

Then we headed back up towards Kentucky and through the Land Between the Lakes.

If you're ever close to this area, I'd suggest taking a look. Really nice 2 lane roads, small towns, nice shops and trading posts, and a lot of local history.

We checked out the "Great Western Furnace"

Here's the car we were driving... Volkswagon Atlas. (Jen was already pricing them while we were on the trip. It's a GREAT vehicle)

Stopped at a little spot between the lakes, nice people, cool shops, lots of history.

    20210520_115224.jpg 20210520_121316.jpg 20210520_121320.jpg 20210520_121410.jpg

This building was the original building, floated across the river (before the lakes) in the 1880s, to get to this spot.
