that is exactly the reason i refuse to use a digital compass.....to easy to trust it and it be wrong....but im also the kind of guy who types problems in on calculators 2xs because i dont trust it

Awsome list.....how do you like that kelty tent? i was lookin into that one for a while. Its good to know other people keep some stuff in there truck for when S.H.T.F. i usually keep most of my things in my back so it doubles as my bug out bag.......just incase zombies over-throw civilization me my gear and my taco will be ready

has anyone used the Eureka Solitaire in cold weather? I am having second thoughts on taking the hammock. How does it hold up?

 

So I have a technical question. I'm going hiking/camping in the Cumberland Gap in a few weeks and I was checking the weather for Ewing, Kentucky. Its 26 degrees right now in Ewing which sits at about 1500 ft above sea level. Where I am camping is about 3500 ft. How much colder will it be at that level than in Ewing? Rough Estimate.

 

An excellent idea, the chili can pot, in fact I'm relatively certain I've done that, or variations on the theme. Once on a motorcycle trip, where I'd only planned a quick camping stop, I did not have my usual assortment of paraphernalia. Prob'ly packed in a hurry as usual.

As I neared my stop for the night, I didn't have much room for victuals so I just picked up some beer and hot dogs. At the campsite I realized I didn't have much to cook with, just a knife and a stove. Too dark and too lazy to build a campfire.

So I had a beer. Then I had fun experimenting with various configurations of the beer can cooker. The first idea was just to put the weenie in the beer can and let it steam, but that was taking too long and it developed hot spots.

Naturally I needed more aluminum to fashion a larger pot. So I had to drink more beer. The flaw in the system, is the danger of running out of beer before the hot dog is done. The good news is that it provides entertainment for an idiot while camping solo. It also provides you with the temporary illusion you are being resourceful and creative when your're really only acting like a 7 year old while eating food that is simultaneously undercooked and burnt.

 

There's a formula out there somewhere on the web, but everything being equal, it should be about 7-8 degrees colder just based on elevation.

 

Thank you Dan. I figured about 10 degrees colder but wasn't willing to bet on it.

 

yep...i used my solitare in cold weather for a few hours......did very well. The tent is very warm and wont build much condensation, if any at all. set up and take a little practice but once you do it a few times youll be able to do it in the dark. Ill be posting a review on mine soon. as a foot print you can just fold up a 6x8 tarp....it works perfect

 

As a baseline guide, subtract 5 degrees Fahrenheit for every 1000 feet of elevation gain.

It's not exact, but a good rule of thumb.

 

This reminds me of a story my friends told me a while back.

In 2002, they went on a 5-day (which turned into an 8-day) trek through the Torres del Paine national park in the Patagonia in southern Chile. As they planned for 5 days, they brought some variety, but hot dogs were their staple meal.

After day 4, their fuel ran out, their side dishes ran out, and they realized they were still 4 days from their destination. They said for the rest of the trip, they just ate cold hot dogs out of the package as they trudged to the end of the track. They stumbled into the town a greasy mess.

To this day, they won't eat hot dogs ever. In fact, they're both vegetarians now.

alright cool thanks! Ive read a few things saying that it is not a freestanding tent? this true? I have some heavy duty plastic sheathing I use for footprints. I cannot justify spending practically the same price I paid for the tent on a piece that lays on the floor.

 

Damn! Steep and Cheap just had the Jetboil PCS Flash on sale for $60! That's a helluva deal for that system.

I think it might actually be a blessing in disguise that we dont have one here. I would spend every penny I had there.
