Is the KDMax premium tune set up for 93, or is it 91 like the OVTunes were? If it's 91, I would think it could probably tune down to the 89 that we have available in my area?

Thanks! That’s exactly what I needed to know. Had no idea it learned up. We have 93 up here in Ohio. I can’t think of anywhere here that has 90.

    Sure! See above ^^

It will learn only up to 90 so running 93 you would want to use the Premium tune to get the most out of it but between 90 to 93 the difference is probably not massively noticeable. At least not enough for me to want to be stuck there. If you have mid grade or 91 I’d just use regular and run premium when you feel like it, and have the ability to go back if a station doesn’t have it. I know there’s some here in KS that only carry 87 in rural areas for example.

For that the Regular tune would be perfect, it can learn from 87 up to 90 so running 89 would be perfect. But premium only learns down to 90, so it wouldn’t learn down quite to 89. Maybe not noticeable but best to err on the side of caution.

    Premium octane learning range-- 91-95

TBH I didn’t even know a 95 octane even existed at a station, and I’ve not seen 93 even once here in Wichita. Our options are usually 87, 89, 91. 93 I think is usually more available down south or out on the coasts I guess? No idea where someone gets 95 or why they’d really want it in a Tacoma, haha. Even my LS1 is 100% fine with 91.

I went with the 87. My reasoning was mostly financial, but it still allowed learning up to 90? (I think thats right), which allows the use of mid grade if desired. I just don't want to pay for premium gas, and the 87 tune is great.

Lots of really good perspectives here. I think you’ll have a solid starting point with tune. As others have said… go with worst case scenario for fuel octane and just throw a dart at tip in. Tip in should be an easy change for you after your first drive if needed.

I have ran 89 on the premium tune. It did not blow up. LOL
It ran good, we are only talking 1 octane different from what it learns to.
Here is the info I have.

The tunes are all Octane learning. But the Regular tune has a range of learning lower than the Premium tune.
The computer will adjust to what is in your tank.
The only catch is that the Premium tune cannot adjust down to the regular 87 octane.
Here is what the ranges are

    Regular octane learning range-- 85-90
    Premium octane learning range-- 91-95

So if you are running Premium on a Regular tune (which is what I do), You will get benefits up to 90 octane--which is an improvement.
But if you want the FULL potential of the tune you need to run the Premium tune and Premium gas.

I am running 93 octane on the regular tune. It learns up to 90. I have ran the 93 octane on the premium tune. The difference is unnoticeable to me.

All kidding aside. I’ve been dealing with OvTune for quite some time and once VfTune became available people like @PapaRee have spent hours, days, Months, figuring out how to make these incredible ECU changes that are our trucks just drive/behave the way they should or atleast how we really want them to Drive. Nice work all you VF students. Don’t forget. None of this would ever be possible unless Mat decided to create VF for everyone to learn and create. Cheers to Mat and all the VF Tuners that have spent countless hours figuring out how to do proper adjustments to make these trucks run their best.
Orange Virus Tuning for the Win! (Or VF Tuning for the win) (Kinda confusing) I do definitely get strange looks at the grocery store wearing my “Orange Virus” Tuning T-Shirts!

Then there are some (you) that run ECT always on, and can hall ass all the time!!
You have the Max power in your truck!!
Mine seems to get better each time I get in it. Smoother shifting, better MPG's, etc. I think it is learning in a good way for a change.

So your willing to say on “Tacoma World” that I have the most “Max Power Truck on Tacoma World?”
(Ha. Just Kidding. I’m Happy where I am!) Until... I show up at your house with 1 SuperCharger kit and 1 Twin Turbo kit. 2 cases of Coors Light and 4 cases of Pacific Northwest IPA. I’ll install both kits on our trucks and your build the tune for each kit. Barn Burner good times! Can’t wait.

Technically, we all have it in ECT, but yours is "always on"
Now add Boost to that and then your'e talking MAX power!

I'm getting that Twin Turbo Tundra as soon as they come out. Already got the Wife on board with the decision. Keeping the Tacoma--Son will be driving in a few years.

Confirming Papa's notes. I run KDMAX Premium and have been in east NC with nothing but regular gas all week. The only difference I have found so far is a little pinging under very heavy acceleration. As a quick fix, I have been adding a bottle of octane boost with every fill up. This is keeping my tank right around 90 octane.

Oh boy. I'll be overlanding around eastern Tennessee and western NC all next week. I wonder if I should drop down to the reg fuel tune since I might not be able to get premium...

That will be a good choice, the 3.5L EcoBoost has been killing the Tundra for years.
