Been sort of thinking of upgrading from my CVT softshell. I'm not looking to buy today, but maybe make a decision by black friday when deals are better. Right now I am liking the roofnest falcon, but I'm not sold on anything in particular yet.

In order for me to make the switch, I need it to be able to clear my garage door opening. At this point, if I'm going to spend the money on a new tent, that is a big problem I want to solve. See the picture below, but I think the roofnest falcon style tent will clear, but maybe not one with the more round covers like the james baroud. I still need to measure exactly how much clearance I have though.

For those that have this style tent, are you able to store any bedding / sleeping bags / pillows in the tent? Right now we keep everything in our CVT, and even though it's sometimes a little work to get it closed, it can be done. I really don't want to have to add a bin to bed to store all of that stuff.

My other concern is the dog. This guy is 85 pounds and right now he sleeps in the annex. I hate the annex, but it is a necessary evil when he comes along. After 8-10 hours on the road/trail in the back of the truck I (mainly the wife) hate the idea of him staying in the truck overnight. But I suppose that would have to be the case with the hard shell RTT.

My main thinking for doing this is to lower my CG when wheeling. I know having it up that high is a bozo move for a dedicated wheeling truck, but my truck is really a jack of all trades master of none. I wheel hard, but also use it for road trips with the wife, dog, and our newest addition hopefully soon too. The hardshell has got to be better in that sense, even if only slightly. @EatSleepTacos I know you wheel with a guy with a roofnest up high. I imagine he might experience slightly less of a pucker factor than I do when off camber?

I know theses few are all major champagne problems, and I'm sort of thinking aloud here, but I'm curious to hear some opinions.

One of my friends has a falcon, he can’t leave bedding in it. I also don’t feel like he’s particularly tippy off-road either. His setup is stupid fast compared to the rest of us soft shell nerds.

for the dog, you could get an awning and add walls, it’s basically an annex. Not connected to the tent obviously, something to consider.

Oh the awning room is a very good idea. I’ve already got the awning too. Good call.
You ever wheel with someone with a hard shell up high like me? Every time I pull in Rausch Creek I feel the judging eyes of the jeepers thinking “this fucking guy.”

We were just at rausch this weekend, no issues. We also generally try and avoid tippy situations though. We did go down J (well, some of us did) and that was a real pucker factor. My falcon buddy didn't follow us down and I’m glad he didn’t. Generally speaking though, he can hang with us with no issues.

Yeah I definitely would not have cleared that tree lol I've been down all of J, just not J1, J2, or J3. I need my master spotter @Skierrichy to really get into some more serious stuff down there. Every time I've gone, I've been the leader, and I don't like to push my limits without someone smarter than me there.

I'm not smarter, I can just see your truck better from outside than you inside!
I'm hoping to make it there for Toyota day in July... But it's going to be close.

awesome and ingenious. I was actually considering doing something like this for mine. I fear I have waited far too long to get the necessary lumber and probably won't be able to make something like this for a while.

Plus my driveway is on a slant so there's that obstacle as well. i think my best hope now is to plant a large oak, wait for it to grow over the driveway, and then lift my tent using a stout branch.

I’m going to try too. The wife had the baby last month but I’m hopeful that I can get away that weekend even just for one long day.

    Congratulations!
    That's awesome!
If you can't make it no worries, you have a much bigger priority.
I know you will be getting out when you can though:thumbsup:

Lots of dollars and no sense...

DUUUUUUDE you are a life saver. This is going to kill two birds with one stone. I popped over here from Tundras.com(recovering TW addict) to check out the hard shell RTT thoughts. My wife is of ZERO help getting the CVT off the Tundra AND, I've been wanting to put a 'carport' in front my garage. This is going to be my carport and roof taker off'er. I owe you a beer. And I don't even care about the outrageous price of lumber right now. And I'm going 10ft with everything. Bigger sometimes is better! We have a sidehustle that will pay for it. This will be worth it's weight in bitcoin!! I owe you a beer man. Holy heavens to all things, this is perfect. Keep on keepin on!

If you are going to make it longer and more of a "car park" I would suggest that you use brackets from these guys.

DUUUDE! Are you kidding me!?!? You freakin NAILED it. Now stop. I'm convinced this is what I'm using and have to use less wood now too but more costly brackets but this is EXACTLY what we were looking for. She is also completely sold on it. Boom! Thank you so much!

I have an exped mat currently in my tent but I now that we’re getting into warmer months and I don’t need as much bedding, I’m going to switch to mattress and 1.5” topper for ease of setup. It seems comparably comfortable. My dog immediately approved.

If anyone is going to go this route, a bread knife made quick work of trimming the foam.

Oh yeah. I also added a T level to aid in leveling out. I used a carpenters level to verify this was accurate, ended up shimming it (after this pic was taken) with a washer to get it dead on. Has to do with the bedside caps not being on the exact same plane as my bed/rtt.
