I have a 2010 tacoma and I will soon be putting on new wheels and tires. I will be getting the TRD Pro/4 Runner Wheels. I want to know if I can use my existing sensors on the new wheels. If not what are the options to bypass the TPMS light. I know that you can use the pressurized pipe idea but Im interested in what else if anything is out there. TIA!

What wheels do you have now? Steelies.... then no, if alloy then yes.

You can use your existing sensors but I would have them checked to see if the batteries are starting to go. 11 years on them is starting to stretch it a bit. Any garage that has a sensor detector should be able to tell you how good the battery’s are.

Question: 2006 owner here. Does the 2nd gen TPMS system require a sensor in the spare, or will it function fine with just 4 sensors? About to buy new wheels and tires and currently have no sensors.

Don't quote me on it but my 2010 doesn't have one in the spare. Im also a mechanic and I can't say I see sensors in spares more than a couple times a year.

Good to know. That was a question asked by someone at Tire Rack and I didn't know the answer.

You are correct. When I got my ‘10 in 2018 it came with the original BFG Rugged Trail spare with a rubber valve stem.

I wonder what the parts cost is. Not the "pay the dealer $250" thing, but the Buy Sensor Online cost. Probably $60 if not less.
I broke a sensor and swapped in a used spare from another wheel set. Same part number. I'll see if I can re-program it or have a shop do it.
So far truck hasn't magically recognized the sensor on it's own and made the light go away.
I know normally the reset button takes some driving to learn the pressure. But it's been some time now.

Maybe I will ask Costco. They have a $1k scan tool that reads/checks the sensors. And then lists a sync procedure for the make/model vehicle. Like for certain Chevy it includes honking the horn a number of times.
But I don't think their tool reads battery percentage. Rather just working vs. not detected (aka failed)
