DIY: Docooler Keyless Entry

Here's a detailed step by step on how to get keyless entry for your 1st gen Tacoma. Should be able to work with 95-2004 Tacoma with power locks. I'm going to keep this simple and to the point.

Remove the bottom steering panel and remove the hood release cord for easy access.

Unbolt the fuse panel, there's two (2) bolts. The one on the upper left I went in on the outside of the dash panel as shown in photo.


Setup your Docooler wiring harness and get rid of the wires you don't need, Orange, Orange/Black, and Green. I remove the wire and pins completely. Crip together, Yellow, Yellow/Black, and Black wires for your ground connection. Crip together the two (2) Brown wires, this will be for your look/unlock flashing lights. Red wire is constant power, White wire is lock wire, and White/Black is unlock wire. You can use the connection type of your choice and setup the harness how you like it. This is how I did mine.


Before you start this part, plan out where you want to put your Docooler controller box so you know how to route your wires. I place my Docooler box on the front left side of the fuse box between the dash panel and it fits perfectly snug there. Now from the Docooler harness connect the Red wire to the White/Red wire from the Ignition Harness located on the right side of the steering wheel.

Connect Yellow, Yellow/Black, and Black wires to a ground point, I chose the one on the left side behind the fuse box. It has two (2) White/Black ground wires connected to it already.

Connect the White wire to Gray (lock) wire and the White/Black wire to the Purple (unlock) wire on the 22 pin plug in front of the fuse box. Unplug this 22 pin plug to make it easier to connect the wires.

Connect the two (2) Brown wires to the Green wire on the 12 pin plug in back of the fuse box. Unplug this 12 pin plug to make it easier to connect the wires. This one was tricky to find since there are a lot of green wires behind the fuse box. It is located behind the fuse box in the middle section. The plug has 6 pin top and 6 pin bottom, 12 pin total. This Green wire controls your hazard lights. I didn’t heat shrink the yellow sleeve yet in this photo.

You can do the connection anywhere along that these wires. Just make sure they are still the same wire from the same plug.

Now test your keyless entry remote to make sure it works before you put everything back together.

When you lock your truck, the lights should blink once. When you unlock your truck the light should blink twice. My light pods and light bar that has DRLs also flash when I lock and unlock my truck.

Also while I had the fuse box unbolted I replaced my stock flasher relay with a Novita LED compatible flasher relay. You can get this from any auto part store, $13. Now my LED turn signals no longer hyper flash. It’s the bigger black relay on the right.

Thanks so much for this. I'm not sure I could have done this without these instructions. It was plenty challenging for me, even with them. Worst part: finding the 12-pin connector and getting it loose!

Always glad to help. It’s definitely a convenient mod and still works. Haven’t had to change the battery on the key fob yet.

 

The Docooler system is good for how cheap it is. I used to manufacture power door retrofit systems for these trucks and always used the Docooler keyless systems. I’ve had multiple customers running them for years on these trucks with no issue. Only complaint is the schematics they include are incorrect for the ground switched diagrams.

I really do appreciate how clean your final product is, the loom, heat shrink, and tape is a nice touch.

I did some research, read the forums, YouTube, and read the reviews when I went with this product. I also remember reading about how their wire schematics was a little off. From the research and confirming with the Tacoma’s electronics manual I was able to have a trouble free install.

Note: If you lock your doors using the armrest switch, you’ll have to hit the Lock button on your key fob to be able to unlock it with the key fob. From now only only use your key fob to lock and unlock your doors. The keyless entry won’t work properly otherwise.

 

Well, I just did this last night. The writeup was spot on, biggest issue was getting the upper bolt out for the fuse box and that was really no big deal. Thank you Tacojohn4x4 for taking the time to do this and making it easy for the rest of us! I now have key less entry and that was the last thing that I was missing on this truck. Thanks again!

I tried installing this year's ago and couldn't get it to work.

 

Need some help please.
It's installed but with 2 problems.
1. It's not always locking the front doors and sometimes does nothing at all even though you hear the box clicking and the lights flash...
2. Only 1 keyfob works, don't know how to program the other one.

Any suggestions???
