Today I pulled out the exped and put in the stock mattress with a 1.5" memory foam topper and wow, the exped makes packing the tent up easier than I realized. Before, I had the exped+doubled up down sleeping bags+down comforter+full sized pillow. I could leave it all in the tent and it would collapse with ease. I didn't have to force the tent to fold at all and the cover zipped right on.

Now, I have the mattress+topper and a down comforter and that's it. I have to force the tent shut a bit and now carry my pillow in the cab.

I made the switch to make for easier setup, i.e. not having to inflate the exped that last little bit but that may be the lesser of two evils here. I'll leave it like this for a few trips and see how it goes.

Great idea, just bought one on Amazon. I'm always just trying to eyeball it and it's always a 50/50 if I have to realign.

Maybe an Exped mat is the way I need to go...

GF and I have went on a nice road trip from SoCal to CO, and back, a couple months ago. was a bit chilly, so we had a decent amount of bedding each night. But I could only pack up 1 blanket, 1 deflated pillow, 1 fitted sheet, and 1 double sleeping bag. And it still leaves my tent a little crooked towards one side lol.

Was certainly an effort the first night when we tried to pack up ALL our bedding in there like an optimistic idiot haha

It was worlds easier when I had my exped in so I doubt the setup I swapped to today will last more than a couple of trips. I just need to give it a shot since I just spent $50 on a foam topper. If you're on the fence, I say it's worth it.

On thing to note though. At least in my tent, the crossbar hardware is on the floor of the tent so you can't put the exped on top of those without tearing a hole. I added an anti-condensation mat but you could also put some duct tape over it or something.

Lol just when I think I have my camping set up complete...

Yeah fortunately I already have the anti-condensation mat as well, forgot to mention that before. Sounds like it might be the move.

REI just sent out their 20% off member coupons the other day so that'll take some sting out of it.

I bought a couple levels to put on my rack but they an eye sore so I haven't yet. I always use my phones level to get it close enough. I put mine on the arm rest in the cab and my girlfriend checks the tail gate. Its interesting how I'll show like 3 deg off in the cab but on the tailgate its perfect. Just a little flex id guess.

I don't really care about something so small, even if it is a little out of place. Its usefulness will vastly outweigh how it looks.

True! I think I just need to get some smaller ones. the ones I got don't even hit on my bars.

Does anyone have a comfy bed mat that fills up more of the width of the bigger tents (Mt Ranier @ 72")? The Exped megamat that I see recommended here, and similar products from other brands, top out at around 54" wide which would really shrink down our sleeping area.

Check the dimensions of this one. https://www.thule.com/en-us/rooftop...ng/tepui-siesta-luxury-mattress-4-_-8002x2414

We have the Tepui luxury mattress in our CVT and the dimensions are the same. Apparently this one is even more comfortable.

Dimensions look good. Is it comfy as heck though? I'll sleep on a 3/4" closed cell foam pad OK, but my wife has not been happy with what we've tried so far (which is just the basic CVT mattress with a 1" memory foam topper)

We started with the basic CVT mattress. Like you, I was fine, the wife was not. It was between the luxury mattress, and the siesta mattress. I couldn't justify the cost of the siesta, and went with the luxury. I'm very happy with the luxury, my wife is happier than before and has gotten more used to it as time went on. If you search this thread for feedback on the siesta, most who've tried it say it is indeed very comfortable. The luxury was a big step up, so I can imagine for the extra cost, I would at least hope, that the siesta follows that trend and is worth it. You can definitely find some real world feedback on it in this thread though if you search.

Thanks for the info. I just realized the price was in USD and had a look at their Canadian site... that's a pricey pad! It would have to be pretty darn comfy for that kind of money.

Yep, exactly. That's nearly what I paid for my mattress in my house! If you could try it in person I might have been tempted, but couldn't do it sight unseen. If they offered the luxury in your size I'd tell you to just do that because we are very content with it.
