Anyone using aftermarket CV’s? If so, which ones? Exploring options.

Do you just need new boots? Normally they only need replacing when they blow apart.

I have extended axles due to my long travel, but all the components are stock. I do need to take mine apart and switch out the grease. I am not looking forward to seeing how bad the 10 yr old grease is.

I would say keep OEM if they need to be replaced.

I don't think the Swell is @Gunshot-6A cup of tea. I could be wrong. I still have to get my CV fixed before I can di di.

Not sure what the issue is yet. I have to get it on the lift and torn apart. I hope it's just the boot, but i've been having a popping/binding sound in the front. Was going to do a bolt check on the front suspension. While doing a visual, I noticed the grease all over, so now I'm thinking the sound was likely my CV.

I've been a few times. Lots of good scenery and lots of interesting places to wander around like the MK tunnels, etc. I'm not really into the whole technical crawly wheely thing though, so Devil's Racetrack, etc just don't do it for me. Sacrilege in Utah, I know.

Doesnt help that my alignment is off from where I like it so I rub like a mofo in the slow stuff right now.

I get my technical obstacle navigation rocks off on my mountain bike.

    Found this.

    The CV practically fell out.

Anyway, had a thread issue where the castle nut goes. May or may not have been caused by some “light” tapping. After an hour of massaging the threads got it on. All good now.

That CV looks fine to reuse. Sitting on a bench it's normal for them to fall apart, the only thing holding them together is the boots. I've got a crimp tool if you want to get a new boot and bands.

I’m interested. I was told there is a lock ring that’s supposed to be in there to hold it on, and there wasn’t. Is there supposed to be?

The parts blowup says there is one but the diagram is exactly like a 1st gen CV axle, which I have torn multiple apart and never seen a hog ring on the inside. Only spot I've ever seen a hog ring is on the stub shaft that goes into the differential.

That’s not how I remember it. How do I tell if the CV is good or not?

What's not how you remember it? The parts diagrams or me not finding a hog ring on the inside? If that CV's still good, those 3 rollers will turn smooth and not have any chips in the metal. Stick your finger in the cup part of it and make sure you don't feel any metal pieces or sharp edges. Stick the whole axle back together, hold it at an angle close to how it sits normally in your truck, and turn it by hand. It should feel pretty smooth. But even a good CV can bind up if you angle it all the way.

Typically they go bad because most people never look under their vehicle so they drive with a torn boot until all the grease is gone, the CV joint gets dry, then the metal on metal action ruins it. Yours is still covered in clean grease so I highly doubt it caused any damage. I'll be home tomorrow by late afternoon/early evening if you want me to look at it.

The diagram isn’t how I remember it. That doesn’t mean much, however.

If I don’t go to the Swell tomorrow, then I’ll hit you up. I’m interested in keeping it. I might check out the Hinkley Overlanding event tomorrow. I’m on the fence.

I purchased the new one from Mark Miller. They charged me a core charge and said if I bring the old in, then I’ll get $75 refunded. The replacement was rebuilt, which I didn’t realize when I purchased it.

You can't even get a piece of shit Autozone or O'Reilly CV axle for less than $100. I'd keep your OEM one for a spare and get a boot kit for it. The reman CV's from Toyota are top notch, I wouldn't worry about it.

Hey guys...I planned to keep the stock upper control arms for another year or 2...basically until the day I actually go with bigger tires (if ever) than the 265/75R16. But as I pull together the plans for the suspension upgrade I'm wondering if I should upgrade the upper control arms now all at once? I had assumed that since I was not going to go bigger than the stock tires that there wouldn't be a need to upgrade yet...but as I am the total noob here...just asking. Will stock ones have any issues?

I agree... That CV looks fine. New boot and some grease and good to go. He caught it in time.
