I test drove a 2017 Tacoma a while back and the gear hunting was definitely present... did Toyota really fix the gear hunting in the 2021 models?

Night and day difference between my 2016 and 2021. I didn't want to think it was bad in my 2016 but driving my new truck in Drive, not just S is actually enjoyable with no gear hunting or delayed shifting.

Didn’t you test drive a 21 to find out for yourself?

I don't know what the earlier gen3 was like, coming from a gen1 tundra, but when you first own these automatic tacoma's they will hunt till they learn your driving habits. I never own a tacoma till this 2020. For the first 1,500 miles, or so i started to wonder what i was getting into owning one of these trucks. But now its totally different. Best suggestion is just to use the D mode and drive it. Its worked well for me.

My 2017 doesn't seem to have issues. Part of the complaints come from having more gears (you should see the complaints on the Ford/GM 10 speeds) and part of it comes from not knowing your driving habits/terrain. Cruise control also helps. Remember, these trucks are geared for MPG. The computer is going to second that and try to keep you at the optimum power/MPG balance and sometimes that means a little bit of shifting occurs. Gone are the days of the 4 speeds like my old Canyon had.

My 2021 at 5k miles is ok. Not perfect but acceptable to me. Towing or mountains is great when you use the ECT button.

My 2021 TRD pro would hunt gears. I got a kdmax tune to fix it.

Mine 2021 does not gear hunt. But like all newer automatics it shifts to higher gears sooner than older transmissions to maximize fuel economy. It really doesn't bother me.

My 2021 doesn't "hunt" per say but living in a hilly/mountainous region it doesn't stay in 6th much. Any hill and it'll bump itself to 5th or 4th quite frequently. Oh well, I still like the truck. We have a 2015 Camry and it does the same thing. They're all programmed for fuel efficiency now adays.

I think it becomes more of an issue as you start adding weight, a lift, etc. My 2018 was fine until then, and after that's when the issues became noticeable. Ovtune fixed it for the most part

My 2020 is much better than my 2017. Here are a couple of specific fixes:
In the city my 2017 would lug the engine because it was constantly in too high a gear.
On the highway if you used cruise control in the 2017 it would constantly up/downshift.

Overall my 2020 drives much more like you would expect. It seems to select the appropriate gear and doesn't shift into overdrive as aggressively.
    IMO much improved.

No. I wish, with the shortage there was no 21’s anywhere near me. The hunting in the 2017 was manageable I was just curious if they fixed it in the newer years. Mine comes next week so I’ll find out soon anyway!!

My 2017 is perfect, after I had the kdmax 6.0 premium tune . This should be mandatory on all taco year models jk :anonymous::crapstorm:

I have a 21 TRD OR, just past 5k. Never had any shifting issues and i live in a hilly/mountainous region. Reading about everyone's gear hunting complaints before i got my hands on one was concerning but after a couple test drives I didn't see any issues.

That’s promising. I was a little concerned about my Tacoma I ordered but now after hearing everybody it seems I don’t have to worry
