Pulled this last weekend. Trailer and roller are 3500-3600lbs combined. Taco doesn’t feel like it wants any more than that

We just got back to Michigan after towing this 21' camper 5800 miles. We averaged around 9.5 mpg. It was worst when we had a headwind at 65mph and were only getting 6.5 mpg. Strangely, our best fuel economy was going thru the mountains of Colorado where we were in 2nd gear most of the day.

 

This is just a rolling storage container now, but it still does get towed around our property now. Empty its 5000lbs, full loaded (like this pic) its 12k. No, it wasn't on anything beyond a dirt road to the next farm over.

 

Bishop2Queens6 -- I bought a 2020 Double Cab TRD Off Road V6 recently, bone stock. Has the manual transmission. Starting to look around at travel trailers, and yours is about the sweet spot for size. I was a little worried it would be too much, but sounds like you have had a good experience? No major instability? I don't know much yet but looks like you have a weight distribution hitch which I'm guessing I would want to pursue. Also ordered a Redarc brake controller. And my understanding of transmissions is that the manual doesn't usually have overheating issues, although i should expect faster clutch wear.

Anyhow, just looking for any thoughts on pulling this size trailer with my specific truck.

 

No stability issues. What dictates what truck I take on a trip is how much stuff needs to go into the bed. More often than not, we're towing with the Tacoma now vs the GMC Sierra since we're not needing that much bed space and really like having a Tacoma sized truck around town when we unhitch.

I do run a WDH and a Harbor Freight sway controller. The sway controller really helps keeping the trailer stable in high wind.

I do recommend that you upgrade the OEM mirrors to dedicated tow mirrors. I just used $30 clip on tow mirrors and they worked, but weren't anything like the tow mirrors I have on my full sized GMC. Dedicated tow mirrors would really help visibility on the roads.

 

That was actually going to be my next question. I would love some nice mirrors, but searching around here doesn't seem to have a clear winner on something that's a drop-in for 3rd gen without giving up functionality. (Being honest, I'm not sure everything that's in the current side mirrors - I know it has the blind spot monitor light which I'm sure I could live without, but not sure of anything else I could be giving up. Need to do more digging there)

 

On another trip to Western NC to do some whitewater kayaking and paddleboarding. It's about time for some upgraded leaf springs

 

Do you run weight distribution? That may take care of it for you. Does your front end feel a little light? That should take care of it if it does. With that said, with the shell and boats on the roof and weight distribution I am only 160 pounds from axle max. I went with the ats HD springs and I have been super happy with them.

 

I have no weight distribution hitch and front end doesn't feel light. The truck sags about 2 inches on the rear from stock to fully loaded.. I've towed this 6 or 7 times with no issues with power (manual transmission) or sway. I do pay special attention to loading correctly especially since I'm loading the truck up with boats. I'm going to start looking into a little beefier leef spring. I should stop by a scale to get an actual weight on the camper, I'm curious as well

Picking her up tomorrow! 2015 Palomino Palomini 180fb. 2800 dry, 3900 max loaded. I'm very experienced towing (been doing it since I was 12, I'm 18 now, on farms and such, heaviest being 35k lbs) but this is my first travel trailer that isn't my parents. It's been immaculately cared for, lovely people selling it. Got it for about 14k CDN. Comes with every single factory option (even the rear mounted gas line and bbq mount, with the bbq!) and a brand new WDH. So excited, I sold my 1992 Jayco Popup that served me well for 2 years, and I also sold my 15 Can-am Outlander 650 XMR for it. I'm so excited, words cannot describe it. I lived in my popup for 3 months of the year before corona hit. Plan on doing the same during the summer again. Sorry if this post is a bit rambly and long winded, I'm just so freaking excited.

It looks like a great size for 1 or 2 - not too big, easy to tow.

It'll just be me and my girlfriend for the next 10 years, so that's exactly what I was goin for. And yea it was a little commitment selling the quad, but it was costing me an arm and a leg, so I was done with it, and I just wasn't enjoying it. Camping, now that I've enjoyed my whole life and I know I won't be stopping anytime soon.
