Posted photos for you to understand what folks were speaking too, but seeing your photo, that is not the issue. Don't worry about that axle nut.

I'm realizing this cog is part of the CV axle assembly right? So the part that holds the bearing to the hub is still probably holding, am I right?

I found a picture that helps illustrate what happened to me. My "cage" sheared in two somehow. The inner race is just rattling around in the housing now. Since the housing is still there with the axle nut, I should be fine to drive it without losing my bearing and wheel right? Anyone else think so?

Wrong. The bearing is pressed into the hub only and not bolted. You cannot run ADD IFS without a CV shaft. This is why the axle nut is present with a cotter pin for safety. It appears that the CV joint is just fooked up. A bad CV clicking and popping is better than nothing. Do not remove the CV and try to drive without it or you will separate the hub from the bearing and wheel will fall off.

That inner race takes a significant amount of force to remove. If the cage is broken or it has popped the circlip then it is out. It would not exceed 10-15mph like that.

By remove the CV you mean the "housing" in that diagram right? That's what holds in the bearing?

Correct. The "housing" keeps the wheel hub clamped to the wheel bearing.

i mean the whole shaft complete, but your CV is already broken it appears. That cage holds the inner race and it is gone or broken so your CV is effectively already separated in two pieces so your axle nut is worthless at this point.

If I'm following, then put it in 2wd and limping home is not an option?

His axle nut and the outer cup(housing) are what hold the wheel on. I'd say that axle nut is far far from worthless. lol

2wd hubs aren’t designed the same. If he had 4wd manual hubs that would work but not with ADD Hubs. This is why manual conversions are nice to have, just pull the CV and keep going.

So 2wd and limp home or no?

I'm picturing him in the dark, snow, alone, etc.

The outer housing is broken from the half shaft. The axle nut isn’t doing anything.

@Yukon DoIt can you call someone to come get you, pick up a cheap axle at autozone/Napa, and come back tomorrow to swap it?
