wait, I see what you are saying now. He could just remove the inner portion of the cv and then keep the outer housing with axle nut on and be okay. I stand corrected. That would work.

Yes. The wheel will not fall off.

OP, try this. Turn your wheel hard driver. Push the axle shaft as far inboard as you can get it to go. See if you can get the race to clear the outer cup. If you can just cut the band clamp off the inner boot and you can pull that whole CV shaft and inner tulip out of the cup. If you can get that out you can drive your rig without worrying about the shaft coming loose and damaging brake lines or anything else.

Now you get it. Thanks for owning up to that. A lot of guys just disappear from threads when they are wrong. Kudos.

OP, your axle nut with keep the bearing and hub on even with the cv broken. If the half shaft is bouncing around or banging around then remove the inner portion where the it meets the diff and just keep in 2WD since you will probably leak out all your front diff fluid to get back. @theesotericone is correct in that your outer housing and nut wI’ll prevent the wheel from coming off.

I had to think about it through a bit of booze. I keep seeing guys remove the cv altogether and that is what threw me.

If he can get the shaft and tulip out the inner cup will remain in the diff. He can drive as fast as he wants without the chance of loosing any gear oil. He can even leave it in 4WD and at least have 3WD. If the 2nd gen inner tulip and cup are like the 1st gen there is no snap ring on that side. The whole tulip will slide right out once the boots loose provided he can clear the outer cage from the outer cup.

Without a locker in front, wouldn't the broken side just get all of the power due to the diff?

    Take tire off
Then a dome cap will be right there the dust shield / cap
You will need a thin screw driver and something to tap it with to get it off
Then your axel nut is right there

That’s what I was saying you cannot drive without the CV in there I was saying leave the front half of the CV with the axle nut and cotter pin engaged into the hub so it doesn’t fall out. I was saying the wheel wouldn’t fall off assuming that the axle nut was still attached to the hub.

Yea I hope the axle nut didn’t come loose and he just broke the inner joint. You can limp home by the pic you just posted but if that axle nut came loose and you don’t have a 35mm your kinda screwed

I've broken more CV's then most and I never once had my axle nut come loose from those breakages. I've never seen one come loose when my buddies I wheel with have broken CV's. There's a lot of torque on that nut and it's backed up by a nut retainer and cotter pin.

True just hope op hadn’t taken it loose before and not torque or put cotter pin back on. I’ve seen ppl who don’t put it back on.

I'm gonna limp home in 2wd today. Shouldn't be a problem as far as roads go. I think I'll leave the inner CV part in, even though it's noisy. I will check on it sometimes but if it stays there it shouldn't hurt anything but the CV itself which will be replaced. Can't tell you how much I appreciate the advice here, means a lot being able to go home with some peace of mind.

While I'm in here though, does anyone have any advice on what CV assembly to order?

OEM is definitely better over napa, autozone, etc. That said if you don't push your truck a lot of people run those without issue and I believe they have lifetime warranties?

I run these to save a bit of money. Rebuilt OEM.

    https://www.cvjreman.com/product-category/toyota-truck-axles/tacoma/

Big question remains though, why did this happen? Keep us updated on what you find.

Curious how the limp trip back goes with running it as is and without removing the center shaft.
