@PapaRee , my tach at WOT was in an interesting place today at around 75 mph. I assume you made a few adjustments in KDMAX to get it there.

Can you share some details, please? What gear were you in and where was your tach? Enquiring minds, you know.

Haha, I got rather annoyed at (3) drivers that ran the same red light yesterday on my way back to work and gave it some extra pedal, more than I have since flashing Sunday and saw that thing rip right on up to 7,250 RPM in 1st and it felt like a rocket ship and made a sound I’ve never heard from a Tacoma. Sounded like a dang sports car combined with my Magnaflow. I would have been worried but I’d already read about the redline changes. Just never gotten it there until then. Usually getting on the highway it still shifts about 5,500 before getting to 6K.

In S mode isn’t 2nd around 60 something? 3rd will give you some power at 80 passing on the turnpike or at altitude up hill. What gear and RPM did you hit? It’s fun though right?

My red line is like 63-6500 in first then 72 each gear after. And yeah, smode will let you downshift into 2nd around 60 but redline is passed that at some point

Just finished 1500 miles of "adjustment" time with KDMax LT Premium between TN and NC. I ran regular gas all week with a bottle of Octane boost at each fill up, in order to keep octane levels hovering around 90. Both ways too and from the beach, I ran I-40 across Black Mountain. Speed was nominally posted +10 (running 80 in all the 70 zones). I never ran with ECT on. The truck never hunted and was happy to run anywhere between 70-80 with nice gentle shifts. Gas mileage sucked at 20.1 average across the entire trip at those speeds, however I never lacked for power or responsiveness to pass. Throttle was instant. In the steep area of Black Mountain, I did drop over into gear lock and held my RPM right around 3k holding 75 up and down the mountain. Both ways, I had about 600-700 lbs of gear plus an extra person in the cab. When someone says this is a completely different truck on KDMax, they are not joking. Cruising at 70+ was a chore before this tune; you had to work to hold 70+. With the tune, 70-90 makes no difference. It settles in, the RPMs drop into the mid 2k and the truck is happy. Gently bump the throttle and you have the gentle pass this truck was lacking (no double down shift and screaming RPMs). Goose it, and you scare people who though you were driving a Tacoma. Honestly, the truck drives much more like my VW Touareg SUV than the Tacoma Sport I bought. Happy is an understatement. Ecstatic is closer to the truth. I enjoy driving my truck now. Long trips are no longer the fight they used to be.

@PapaRee and others, can you please clarify if the tip-in and tune adjustments apply to 4 hi and 4 lo?

Reason I ask is because I’ve been doing extended off-roading (hours on rocky trails) and I’ve noticed it being too jumpy/wash boarding in 1st and 2nd gear in both 4lo/hi situations. I have the SLT file.

An example is, in 4lo and going along a road with lots of grapefruit-basketball sized rocks, it’s super bumpy, so naturally your body/leg/foot will be bouncing. It resulted in not ideal response where it would “whoom, whoom, whoom” on the throttle and caused a washboard effect.

I haven’t gone off-road in my new truck before I got the tune so I have no comparator, but I remember that in my 2nd Gen, in 4lo, the throttle was like a big pillow (and for good reason).

Figured the first step was asking if throttle was equally impacted across all drive modes. Then if so, I think this is where the future selectable tunes will be huge.

How is everyone getting such great gas mileage. I have the LT tune and just drove almost 50 miles between 65-70 and barely got 17. That’s worse than stock by at least 3-4 mpg. Also keeping it at a steady 70 was constant work between 5-6 gears. The roads are relatively flat here in Florida C01442E0-40C3-446F-A483-BCB48797A7F7.jpg

In town, I will average 18.5-18.6 .... being reasonable on the throttle, but not babying it. If I race stop light to stop light, I can drive that down to 15 easy. :mudding:

Scott I appreciate you sharing your incite on your driving experience with this tune. I can say I share that same feeling as yesterday was the first day I took my Tacoma on its first elevation gains test after running it a few months on sea level. I made the drive on I-64 from Norfolk, VA to Fishersville, VA yesterday morning for a Navy retirement ceremony, took about over 200mi and three hrs to drive (running regular aggressive throttle on 93oct fuel).

The true test came around Charlottesville, VA (approx. 594 ft. elevation) as elevation starts to climb. Going through a stretch of the Shenandoah mountain ranges of the Appalachians I got up to as high as near the intersection of I-64 and Hwy 250 near Afton, VA (approx. 1900 ft. elevation). The truck was all go from Charlottesville and up through these ranges without any issue and was just pure joy to drive. I wish I had a KDMax sticker on at that time as I smoked pass a fellow 3rd gen Tacoma on this incline holding 5th and 6th gear steady with ease. Hell I should've asked him to pull over and do him a favor and try out the tune lol. I’ll be making the trip today on Skyline Dr. through the Shenandoah National park enroute to see the Luray Caverns and making a Mtb trip out of the Massanutten Western Slope. Gonna enjoy this day for sure!

All in all, I can say from finally having an incline driving experience, this tune kicks ass! Thank you Scott for giving this tune a shot. I know you have several choices to go with (and that goes for everyone else as well) and you chose the KDMax tune, and we at KDMax are very grateful for your choice and at the end happy that you're happy with this product. To many more exciting adventures in the Tacoma, cheers!

    V/r,

    Alex

This was all highway and being as light on the throttle as possible. Such mixed results.

Throttle settings are global at this time. You may want to try the lowest throttle option known as “wifetip” which uses the same throttle as OV2.0. The other aspects of the tune remain such as shift points and other tweaks. I recommend this throttle to people that spend a lot of time in 4Lo.

Huge thank you to @PapaRee and all the tuners out there (@Mooseditty17 @TermLimits @OVTune) who provide the platform, knowledge, & tunes to make our trucks usable as trucks. A year ago, I wouldn't have tried towing a vehicle with my Tacoma because it could barely handle itself with the wheels/tires/lift. Between the gears (4.88's) and the tune (I used KDMax 6.0 wife tip, using ECT + S mode 5th gear), it pulled the car nearly as competently as my wife's Ecoboost powered Expedition. Trying to quantify it, I'd put it at 70% tune and 30% gears. From my own experience, while gears are nice, you need a tune to take advantage of them.

The trip was a mix of flat and some hills. 180 miles one-way with an empty trailer to pick the car up from where I had it stored and 200 miles to the car's new owner. I won't hesitate to take it on that kind of errand again!

So I have the LT KDMAX tune. I think the speed limiter was opened or raised to a higher level? I think our trucks topped out stock tune at 105 MPH? Has anyone seen the results of the KD MAX tune on speed limits? That way I do not have to try to find out......

Yes they are raised to 350kph. Mainly for people with 5.29 gears to get over 85mph.

Thanks. I think this is very important and I (and likely many others) overlooked this before it's too late. Even if I had brought a laptop and cable, there was no internet or cell signal for many many miles, so I wouldn't have been able to flash it back to stock or a different throttle tip-in.

Honestly can't imagine delicate low speed 4Lo throttle control in LT or Reg, given that SLT still got into trouble with gravity of coming off of rocks/bumps/depressions, while trying to hold steady.

@PapaRee , is the ultimate solution here likely map switching functionality, or will there be the possibility of unique tip-in/throttle by drive mode? Personally would love bone-stock (sleepy) throttle in 4hi and 4lo. Can't think of when I'd need the more lively and enjoyable throttle if I'm in a 4wd situation of wanting traction and control.
