Has anyone taken a temp reading of there power steering fluid?

I was a little surprised how hot my hose was the other day when I was relocating it to fit resi's. Contemplating on installing an auto trans rad and using that as a cooler if it's around 200*.

 

It’s cool idea but a lot of work and more hoses and don’t think there’s any benefit,
I’ve never have an issue regardless of its temperature in 660,000 miles.
I did replace it at 500k tho but they are cheap items, if it was an expensive item I would say absolutely.
I’m not aware of these failing regularly

 

Depending on the size of your tires it could indeed get hot. But I’ve never overheated Toyota power steering.

the f-350? Yea that I’ve gotten way too hot.
Derale makes a 2 pass power steering cooler that I plan on running on both my trucks just to have some cooling

 

Seems like the worst case would be on a trail somewhere when little airflow. I dunno. The factory setup has a little bit of a cooler (a couple of tubes bolted to the bottom of the frame, or at least mine did). I went and installed a power steering cooler in front of the radiator since my factory one was MIA.

 

@xtremewlr used his stock transcooler on his 4th gen 4runner with no issues for cooling power steering

 

It's been pretty rare but I have had the steering fade on trails before. The loop that Toyota puts in the line was in the way of where my resi were so I thought maybe I'd get some soft hoses and clean it up a bit down there.

Trying to be as efficient as possible with space and don't want to add another cooler. Hoping to add another radiator in front of the grill for the air/water intercooler.

Trails is where I notice it.

 

Yes I've noticed it too pushing around 35s.

Brett of course installed a cooler on his and said it helped. It'll certainly help the life span of the pump.

They actually make ps coolers specifically. I think I got this one.

Not that much work. Just one new hose. You can use the stock return line(non pressurized) and then a new hose to the pump.

You've never run a larger tire than 31s so it makes sense that you've never had issues.

 

There’s a balance there, a large cooler is going to add head loss to the system and make the pump work harder, but cavitation from overheated fluid is going to damage the pump too. Just have to get the right size and expect some reduced lifespan regardless.

 

Probably too early to tell, but it hasn’t chipped any further so far!

 

I had my pump apart a few years ago and everything spec'd out just fine. Not really super concerned with heat but I figured I could clean up the metal loop I had to bend to get out of the way. Just didn't want to introduce any more heat to it if it runs cooler than the engine.

Got started on a upr RH shock mount area frame repair today.




Need a new muffler and decided to do fuel pump and fluid film too, so I removed the bed.

Wanted to share with my rust belt brothers a method I used to get the LH FR bolt (near fuel tank) out. Of course it broke the weld loose before it freed up. It's too close the the tank for me to feel okay about plasma or oxy/acet.

I ended up using a right angle pneumatic drill with a hole saw to get access to the head of the bolt. It has two flat sides (not a hex bolt head) that can be held with an 18mm open end wrench. Key Point: make sure to use a hole saw that is at least 25mm in diameter so the wrench will fit through and have some clearance.
