Is gear hunting fixed in the 2021 Tacoma?

Could swear i'm around 2200 in 6th, or bit more at 80 mph.

 

2021 OR here. Not bad. Turning ECT on helps in hilly terrain. Only times it was annoying were I first picked it up, until the ECU "learned" my driving habits. I've done a lot of electrical work in the last 6 months, and it's definitely the ECU. Every time I disconnect the battery it loses it's marbles and has to repeat the learning period. Very noticeable difference.

 

Mine runs almost dead on 2000 RPMs at 80mph in 6th. Makes for a quiet and smooth ride while cruising down the interstate.

 

Just curious what rpm you have at 60 mph.

 

Ya sure you have the v6? Around 2200 is about right for the auto with a 4.3, which came with the 4 cylinders.

 

Back in the day transmissions had 3 speeds. Then 4 became common, then 5. And today we have 6, 8 and 10 speed transmissions in trucks. They didn't design a transmission with 6-10 gears and intend for it to only use 3 of them. They are supposed to change gears more often.

60mph in 6th is running 1500 RPMs.

 

Yeah, thats about what i see on my tach...somewhere between 1500-1600 rpm. Must of been doing 80 + mph when getting a higher rpm reading.

 

I've only got 750 miles on my 2021 but that's my take as well. No hunting, but it will aggressively upshift unless you keep your boot in it. It wants to be turning 1500 RPMs all the time.

I have only ever driven my 2021 (first Tacoma!) but all the horror stories I heard about the auto in this truck turned out to be non-factors for me.

 

My 6.4 had very very little lag and would lots of boost quickly with the factory twin turbos and minor mods. My 7.3 takes a little longer but as long as I don't lug it the boost will build relatively quickly.

 

I owned a 1968 Oldsmobile Cutlass with a "power glide" 2 speed transmission. Low and High. And you guys think the 6 speed sucks!!!

 

Thanks for posting the gears, so we can all see the obvious problem with the auto trans from 2016 to 2021, and no the new truck may have better ecu mapping to make you feel better, but the problem is obvious. As others have said, this engine is not n it's power band until 2500 rpm plus. But the 5th and 6th gars on the trans are over drives and worthless. The engine can't maintain highway speed limit in 6th gear, due to lack of power at 2k rpm or less, so it drops down to 5th and sees it can't do it there either and drops down again, then you left off the gas and it goes back into 6th, then you slow down and you hit the gas which causes it to shift all over again. The only real solution is regearing to lower ratios. If toyota had used the exact same gear ratios on the auto trans that they did on the manual trans there would be no problem using std tire size.
