Lack of maintenance, I had 325K on my 4Runner when I sold it and it was all original.

it is well documented that prior model trucks with different suspension design suffer from ball joint failure that causes the wheel to fall off.

I always wondered if the 2nd gen suffers from it as well and how so, given the suspension design is different/revised and hearing of such failures is less common if at all.

    ie 1st gen Tacoma, etc.

total ball joint replacement probably due every 100k
certain cars wear them differently. Like they can have detectable play with pliers (the Tacoma usually doesn't) and clunk obviously over bumps, whereas the Tacoma does not do it as obviously

I wonder if this is why they designed the axle to pop in/out of a hole in the trans. So it survives being yanked out.
Maybe not. Because street car Corolla is also that way.
as opposed to other car designs where it's all bolts holding it.

Remove the sway bar for the time being. You don't need that to get the truck back on the road and removing it will make it easier to finish replacing parts. I removed mine permanently but I have aftermarket coils that help compensate.

@whatstcp - or 5100's? I was thinking the same thing but haven't actually heard of any such failures related to the spacer, specifically. Maybe, folks not admitting such failures.

If the tire fell off, there would be a wheel laying next to it. Unfortunately for the OP, almost everything fell off.

That HUUUUGE spacer lift is 100% the cause of your ball joint failure from over extending the upper ball joint.
