I'm not an enginerd, but I think I follow and agree.

Problem is, that even with zero 'preload' the spring is still preloaded at full extension of the coilover.

My point was we're arguing semantics as it doesn't matter what color your shocks are, we've seen failures.

 

Ima have to hit him up I guess.

What a helpful, but terrifying thread to stumble upon. I'm in a 3rd gen 4Runner, so different but similar than y'all. Currently waiting on my ADS coilovers to be shipped, now I'm feeling the need more than ever to look around for cracks in the body and frame of my runner. Interesting what one of you said about ADS suggesting to not run limit straps, I was under the interpretation that everyone should be running limiting straps with performance 2.5"+ coilovers... I'll have to look into that.

Just found another crack in my core support today. I think that's the fourth one.

Leaf spring perches. Honestly not even sure I fully fixed the issue because I was under the gun and ran out of brake clean. Was rewelding my shock mounts/testing flex side to side when I saw a leak coming from the perches that smelled like gear oil.



It was so packed with dirt and shit that I assume it’s been seeping for a little

I cleaned it up a bunch and shot a bunch of wire in there lol




I thought these things were supposed to be thick af? im hoping it is fixed at least temporarily and I’ll move up my search for a full float fj80 rear.

This post from @Dirty Pool is interesting about the u bolt flip...

It's funny because the metal on the axle housing almost looked like it was bulging to me from the last u bolt flip kit I had on there. But I also thought that the axle housing should be pretty thick no? Not enough for u bolts to essentially crush/deform the axle, but it almost seems like that's what I see in my picture on the leaking side. Friends told me it's just from the u bolts/rust wearing it that way, but I feel differently.

 

I believe Brett had this same issue. not sure just rewelding it totally held up over time for him.

My fix has held up thus far. I cut the perches off and welded half sections of 3" pipe on top and bottom of the axle. Then some new perches on top of that.

 

I believe his are still leaking according to the thread after I read back lol.

Yeah fuck all that noise, I'll be keeping an eye out for a FF fj80 rear with the factory locker. Already annoyed that I'll need to weld those goddamn shock mounts AGAIN on the new axle

 

I pulled the axle, ground down the cracks, rewelded, and it leaked on the 1st trip after that. Think it was coming from inside the perch.

That axle went to the scrap bin, and I tossed in a used factory housing and I welded all the way around the perches. No issues yet.

 

Get an open FF80 and put an ARB in it. It will probably be the same price given the premium those locked ones go for, and I've read there's issues with those compared to the open ones.

 

Brett is correct, the factory E locker in the 9.5 can bind on the axle shaft and you have to cut a window in the housing to get it unstuck. The ARB is a more reliable way to go. I have a FF80 axle and arb already, just got to get the front LT on first and then plan out the rear suspension and axle build.

 

ARB and reliability is not synonymous in most toyota rear ends I have seen. Can't even count how many people had leaky rear lockers that only worked when they felt like it due to blown seals. My e locker never fails to engage. Thankfully I have had good luck with the arb in the front.

Do you have any good links on this bind that can happen? Never heard of it, I know @Rockbaron1 is running a 9.5 elocker with no issues.

 

I "hear" alot about arb's leaking and all. But have never really seen it happen ever. So idk..

Could get an newer Elocker to put in the open which honestly would be the best of all worlds....also most expensive.
