What are the issues with running a 2RZ stand alone.
I have a complete running 1996 2wd Tacoma with manual transmission donor truck. I am swapping it into a 1966 Toyota Stout. This is to be a "keep-it-simple" swap. I know I can buy a $750 adapter harness but I am wondering about the issues I would face if I try to just pull "everything" from the 96 and drop it into the Stout.
I'm just starting the research phase so excuse my ignorance. I'm a Land Cruiser guy with little to zero experience specifically with Toyota trucks.
What parts of the wiring or fuel systems are going to give me problems? Things like ignition switch, sensors, gauges, fuel tank/pump, for example.

Any assistance will be greatly appreciated.

There shouldn't be too many issues if you can read electrical diagrams and are good at rewiring. The hard part will be motor/trans mounting. Upgrading brakes for the increased horsepower.

Not worried about motor/trans mounting or brakes. I AM not a wiring zen master... those are the issues I'm trying to learn about.

What will need manual rewiring other than connections/adaptions to the gauges?

A manual 2rz swaps over pretty easy when it comes to electrical. If you are leaving the motor stock, just bring over the ecu and the wire harness. All the wiring is plug and play. I would use all the electrical from that 96. It is a pretty simple setup. Just cut out what you don't need. For example you probably won't be running AC or air bags. You don't get any weird lights because of it. The steering column might be a bit tricky with the blinkers and windshield wipers.

No AC in the 96. Will missing airbags do anything to impede running?... What other stuff exists on the 96 that might throw the ECU off? I'm not worried about a check engine light, If I HAVE one at all I'd put it in a non-intrusive spot (so I have it for diagnostics/alerts) and I own electrical tape to cover it anyway!
I hope to use the stock Stout column and turn signal stalk. Wiper switches are on the dash. Speedo and other gauges will need to be dealt with... eventually. My goal is to have it run and drive in the Stout - everything else is gravy.

Once all the stuff for the engine/ECU is sorted all you need to do for the Stout is cut and splice the accessories. Fuel will be another hurdle, you either modify the stout tank for EFI or see if the 2RZ can mount in it's place or get a custom one.

That is the crux of my question... what will stop me.

I installed a Holley Sniper EFI in my FJ60 and used an external fuel pump... no issues. That was my pnal here as well.

Air bags are separate from the motor wiring. You don't need to worry about it. Nothing will prevent the motor from running as long as all the wire going to the engine work.
Crank, Cam, Coolant temp, Fuel injection, spark, knock, oil pressure, maf, Fused power and ground. The evap and egr will throw codes, but you can run it without it. That is just emissions.

You can trick the ECU to turn off the airbag lights if you use the right resistors in the harness to make it think the squib is still present. Luckily the 96 only has one airbag, 98 and above had two.
