Did you get a brand new one?
Now I'm wondering how those teeth are held in.
Looks like some kind of spring clip in the back forcing them forwards in a notch?

Yes I did buy new. I have been looking for a while for used. The ones I have seen were either 48” or 72”+ and way overpriced. The last one I seen was 800.00+, rusty, fixed blade, and 4 hour drive one way.

    This is how it attaches:

A few days ago I excavated the chipper from the shed, I last used it in 2010 near as I can tell -- work got in the way of life for the last 10 years or so...
New battery -- $56, it is an all plastic sealed job only about 1/3 size of a regular mower battery. Oil & grease, found a new knife in the garage (from 2004).

Had some squatters under the fuel tank. Funny, the fuel didn't have the awful varnish smell of bad modern fuel - it was old enough to be real no ethanol fuel.
Fortunately I always use the fuel shut off valve, there was fuel left in the tank but the carb was stored dry.

It has a Vanguard 16 twin, amazing smooth and quiet. Naturally Daisy had to supervise.

Ginger needs a wash -- she has been my daily since the brake locked up on the van.
Too lazy to fix it yet.

This is such a satisfying machine to run, converts a big pile of crap to chips, gives a real sense of accomplishment -- like taking things to the dump.

Really takes a 3 person crew to be efficient, 1) to bring the brush 2) feed the machine 3) keep the discharge clear -- 3 people make brush piles vanish in minutes.

She is six pounds of "I'll do whatever I darn well please", fears nothing -- deer, bear, turkeys, vacuum cleaners, lawn mowers...
Only 3 houses on our dead end dirt road, can't get much better for traffic!
Everything is on a hill however, which I have been fighting with for 27 years. I don't mind living on the hill -- living with it is a p-i-a!

I was contemplating taking the small deflector off the discharge and trying just that.
They come out with quite a bit of force, might blow right out of the wagon.

make some pins from square stock to drop down behind the teeth, deep enough to go thru to bottom, and a 90° bend at top . this is how mine is and haven't lost any in 10-12years.
If you get into some heavy roots the front top of the shank pocket will start to break out ( mine has done this ) at some point i'll weld a face plate to beef up the front.

Picked this up second hand yesterday - It's a 2008 with 500 hours and change on the clock. It has a few little dings and scrapes, but nothing bad for its age. Mechanically, it seems to have been maintained well. Blades, belts, air filter, and transmission fluid all looked brand new and the deck is clean. I put new NGK plugs in it last night and am going to change the oil and filter tonight so I have a starting point there. I also ordered a new seat since the one that's on it has some cracks and is the biggest thing dragging the appearance down.

The differential lock is amazing, I doubt I'll ever be able to go back. It's tougher to get it stuck than my old Craftsman to begin with due to the bigger tires and weight, but I found some spots yesterday to deliberately try it. Just hit the lock pedal and it goes!

This is a plain X500 so it doesn't have power steering or the hydraulic lift deck. I can't imagine why I'd want power steering, it steers super easy. The pedal lift for the deck works fine, too.

Two annoying things - the fact that it kills the PTO if I back up and don't hold the override switch drives me nuts. And the drive pedals don't return immediately. It takes maybe a second for them to move back to a neutral position. Interestingly, there's a shock connecting the pedal rod to the transaxle so it seems like this may be by design to make slowing down less abrupt?

Ha, thanks! I need a shed to put the tractor, ATV, snowblower, push mower, weedwacker, and pressure washer in. In the summer it isn't a big deal because only the girlfriend parks in the garage. In the winter I like to park in there too, though, so I don't have to clear off the truck and so the driveway is empty and easier for snow removal. That stuff ends up getting moved to a canopy out back which isn't my favorite solution.

That was going to be something for this summer, but a lot of the funds for it just went toward this tractor. My last one went through what I think is just a spindle, but I decided I was done working on something that didn't really suit my needs to begin with.

Thought the same. It would take all my will power not to mix up those end wrenches when you weren't looking.
