Has anyone done the road up to "Hull Mountain" out of Lake Pillsbury?

    1) I'm curious if its open. I heard rumors last summer fires may have it shut down.
    2) Seems like one can keep winding north into some campgrounds. Any recommendations there?

For the tent and fuel mounted today.

Going to wing it this weekend.

East towards Mono Lake, Masonic, and Bodie. See what’s along 395.

I've been out to Bodie, and circled back on the Bodie-Masonic road, but I've always been curious if you can continue through the town, and make it to Hawthorn Lake in NV. Maps show a gravel road that winds through the canyon, but I can't tell if it's gated or not.

I’m not familiar with the area but I might travel that route and see if there is a gate or not though. Did you enjoy your route when you were out there?

Definitely. Bodie is a cool spot to checkout if you've never been there. It's easy to take the main highway route into town. When you get into the town there is a parking lot and adjacent to that, is a dirt road that climbs out of town north. I believe that is called "Bodie-Masonic". Its a fun route, very tame, but some fantastic high-desert views. It will loop you north and back into Bridgeport. There are some offshoots that will take you god knows where... so I would bring Gaia or Google Maps to make sure you stay on the right route.

Other than trying out that route to Hawthorn, I've also wanted to go check out another ghost town in the area called "Aurora", and apparently near Bridgeport there are a few hot spring spots.

Let me know what you discover out there, and have a great trip.

    The usual
The ghost town is a trip, pretty well organized with tours and stuff. I was there last year when that was the only spot without smoke. Few pics:

I think you'll enjoy your time at Bodie. Heading back toward Masonic via the Bodie-Masonic Road is something else. As you come down from the higher parts of the road, you'll find a small Aspen grove with the foundations of a few homes that were part of Masonic. The grove offers a nice protected spot for camping-it can be quite windy. In colder weather, it will be pretty chilly.
A bit farther along the road is the mine site. You can wander around, in, around, whatever the site. But keep in mind there is no maintenance and the buildings are pretty rickety. As you head back toward 395 and Bridgeport, you'll pass a public Pew-Pew range-it's kind of a weird setup-just know it's there.

Going from Bridgeport to Bodie via Masonic gives you a kind of cool over-look view on Bodie. You bypass the entrance station so won't get any of the goods they give out (which can also be had in the General Store).

The road east of Bodie is not gated. You can for sure get to Aurora, not sure what happens after that but it's probably all open to Hawthorne. We were heading to Aurora from Bodie on a trip last year but got turned around because of fires. I think there was also a bridge out or a landslide somewhere over there but think they resolved that that.

Lots of hot springs in the area, google maps has a lot of them now adays.

Have you ever been? It can be a bit trashed out, I’ve seen thousands of shell casings, burnt chairs, beer cans etc...it’s kinda known to be a party spot. Also pretty sure it was hit by a fire last year. Things change tho so who knows I haven’t been since 2019
