My understanding is that they can subject an intact gearbox to various mechanical and electrical tests but cannot break the seal to open one up without incurring a penalty. I could be wrong.

"F1's parc ferme rules allow teams to replace any parts that have been damaged during qualifying.

Ferrari's inspection of the car did not suspect any problems with the driveshaft components so it kept those parts on the car.

Binotto added: "There is a clear regulation saying you can only change parts which were damaged.

"So the parts we changed were really the ones damaged: the front wing, the front right suspension, and the rear right corner. They were clearly damaged, and we got permission to do it, so that's it."

They can break the seal to inspect for damage with FIA approval but would have incurred a 5 place grid drop for replacing anything inside the gearbox

Lewis is the type of driver that complains from green light to checkered flag regardless if he is in the lead or not.

I understand that and that the problem wasn't in the gearbox. I was addressing your comment that "...they completely disassembled and re-assembled the gearbox overnight to inspect it for issues." AFAIK they couldn't have done that (broken the seal) without incurring a grid place penalty.

Time to move on. With Max leading the championship he's going to be on fire. It's about to get real interesting. I'll say it again Perez needs to get up there for RB to battle Merc.

I'm not quite sure which way your comment was leaning (sarcasm towards me or not)... so here's just an expansion on my original quote. He wasn't complaining last week when they implemented the undercut strategy. His job is to drive the car... not be a baby when the strategy doesn't work out in his favor. Mercedes pays people to implement strategy... they pay him to drive the car... they pay mechanics to change tires, etc. Stay in your lane Lewis.

Jesus I wonder what Lewis' radio would sound like if he got all the bad luck Bottas gets. Guy would be on the ground throwing a tantrum.

i say Lewis has the right to complain about anything he wants. He made that team billions and created an F1 following some drivers couldn’t and a following some teams wish they had.

I don't really care anymore but just curious if you read the part where it says they can break the seal on the gearbox and replace certain components with FIA permission and not be deemed to have used an additional gearbox incurring the 5 grid place penalty ?

No bad towards you buddy, just that if he did better in qualifying he wouldn't be in that position...

The tide is changing and Max is currently ahead, but this is what he wanted yeah? Competition to be closer... Bring it on, I like listening to him whinge :)
