that's only if you're writing them (i.e. selling them). You are on the other side of the transaction...meaning someone is paying you to buy the shares at the strike price at a later date. So you pocket that premium. If the price goes down - below the strike - the option could be exercised and you would have to purchase the shares at the strike price (but since you've collected the premium, those shares are cheaper: strike - premium = cost basis). you want the price to go up, but your max profit is limited to the entire premium. as the price moves up (or get closer to expiration and price is above strike), the option value will decrease to 0.

if you're buying a put, then you make money if it goes down. you're paying (the put seller/writer) for the option to sell stocks at the strike price. If prices goes down, it's cheaper to buy shares in the market, then exercise and sell at your strike price for profit. Or you could just sell the puts themselves as they will be worth more than you bought them for.
