IMO the Oilers didn't lose because of anything McDavid or Drai did or didn't do.
All you need to know is the Oilers were rolling out 2 forward lines and 4 d-men in a triple OT game that was on the second night of a back-to-back. They had 11 useable players in this situation including their goalie, the Jets had 17.

 

Just going to throw out there that Oilers fans are raging because McDavid didn't draw any penalties. The one big penalty Matthews drew, he drew in his own end by being physical and pissing someone off. If McDavid wants to draw calls IMHO he needs to do more in his own zone.

 

Again, they were completely ineffective until they stacked the top line together. That would be like the Penguins playing Sid and Geno on the same line for a few games. It never happens (aside from random shifts here and there, situationally) and for good reason. So they were put together and you basically gave up the ability to win any match-up battles what-so-ever, aside from when that line is out there. Leon proved he can put up points without McDavid, in the regular season too. The playstyle is totally different in the playoffs. We all know that. So figure it out. Ok so you can't go 100mph around the outside and walk to the net like you did all year, so figure it out. And instead of trying to turn every game into a shootout, pick and choose your areas so it isn't high risk hockey. So it's either on them or the coaching staff for wanting to play that way. If the argument is that they aren't deep enough, then don't go into a series playing like you want to try to put 8 on the board every night. Plenty of teams can play a more fundamental system, put more focus on team defense and be opportunistic when the chance is there (essentially what Pierre is saying.) It's not a slight towards either of them, but a suggestion to adjust their game. What they do all regular season doesn't transfer over to the playoffs. Mcdavid plays 30mins a game, Crosby is lucky if he plays 20mins. So if the guy is going to be out there for half the game, essentially if he's not putting up a shit ton of points, chances are you aren't going to win, especially when that is his/Oiler's game plan, or so it seems.

 

Jeff Carter came to play. He scored 1 1/2 minutes into the game on his first shift.

 

Pit-NYI game just went south for Pit, brutal.

 

Jarry sucks, and should have been pulled after the 4th goal. If pens lose, i fully support firing Sullivan and trading malkin.

 

Yeah. It looks like you can stick a fork in the Pens. Three straight by the Isles.

 

The problem is Legace is really untried. Malkin has actually been ok since his return. Right now the Crosby and Rust are -3, with Guentzel actually a -4. That's brutal.

 

And, Jarry has been tried, and is horrible. What do we have to lose at this point?

 

Not much for this game and series. I think the team may be thinking about Jarry's confidence going forward. I know it doesn't look like he's a good alternative for next season, but what other options are there for next year? Maybe Hextall will blow up the team. It looks necessary. Goalies are strange birds though. They can go through spells where they look unbeatable and then just implode, or vice versa. A few years ago Murray looked like the answer. That's why a tried and true guy like Fleury is rare.

 

That fifth goal was brutal.

 

Don't hold your breath. The refs have let a lot go.

To be fair, we were left questioning Fleury after many playoff series also. His playoff stats were not great. But I get your point, he still was a proven number 1, unlike Jarry. Pens knew they were rolling the dice going into the season with 2 unproven tendys. But now it's crazy to think that the Desmith injury may have cost us the series. You'd have to think if he was available, he would've seen some ice time, right? I still would've pulled Jarry tonight buy the damage was already done.

Another issue I have is everyone always talking about how we create chances and whatnot. Ok, but over and over now, we don't finish. He'll, that was an issue when we won the Cups even. Those teams constantly had the puck but made Anderson, Jones etc look like Hall of Fame. And it's even worse when we lose. Chances don't count. Possession means nothing when you can't cash in. Plenty of good teams play the counter-punch game, don't have those fancy stats but end up with goals/wins. NYI is 1 of them.

Sorry, Pens fans. I decided to pull for my new hometown team in the playoffs and this is the result.

If it's any comfort, I'm pretty sure the NYI are going to get run over by the Bruins. I can't see their rink a dink opportunity hockey, also known as modified modified trap (jks), working against a physical team.

My girlfriend is a Bruins fan. So I'm now going to play the role of "Supportive boyfriend" and "cheer on" the Bruins.

 

Maybe the barn can burn down mid game and take out both teams? Then you can play supportive boyfriend.

I do not like the Bruins. Lol.
