Unfortunately being a resident of Los Angeles County I know this all too well. It is downright impossible to get a CCW in LA County unless you are LE (and I am not). Neighboring counties such as Ventura and Orange make it possible, but just barely however you must live in that county. I wasn't saying he had a CCW, more just joking about our background check process.

Actually, Orange County has gotten harder to get a permit. Supposedly, the Sheriff of L A County was going to make it easier. The jury is still out on that.

Some counties, mostly in central and Northern California are much better at issuing permits.

Oc is almost shall issue unless something has changed in the past few months.

La County is how oc was 10 years ago. Possible for the average Joe with a decent reason (business related, verified threats, etc...) no longer need to be connected.

Orange County got only marginally harder to get a permit when Peruta vs San Diego went en banc because you could no longer use "self defense" as your good cause. Approvals have been slowing down mainly because the CCW department has new leadership and staff that are learning the ropes, but if you can articulate a decent good cause, have a clean background record and are not a prohibited person there is generally no problem getting a CCW permit in OC. I've only heard of few people being denied and they should not have applied to begin with.

My wife and I have had our permits going on 7 years now and when we move out of California in about 5 years we won't have to deal with this anymore.

Self defense was only allowed as a reason for a few months, you can get a ccw using a hobby as a reason (camping), I know people that have used walking the dog or kids at night and the department just wants a pic of them outside with them. One person has one because cell reception is spotty near his home so he can't call for help reliably.

The new sheriff was the old lt in charge of ccw and was the one that started lifting restrictions as an lt. Ccw approvals are slow because of demand, it increased over 10x. The ccw staff is still the same only the lt changed and he just rubber stamps what the staff hands him.

What I'm getting at is don't be afraid to apply, the ocsd staff is very helpful and as odd as it sounds seems ccw is the one gun right getting better in ca. And if you own a business or have a supportive boss even those in la County can get one now.

Interesting...as I understand it, San Diego is near impossible along with LA unless it's explicitly for your job or a tangible safety concern. Buddy of mine in San Bernardino got his a while back, it was like a year long process with between his assessments, interviews, and everything else included.

    Mods? Yes, oh yes..
I work with a sheriff's dept here in SoCal and it's less about proving need and it's more about convincing them there's no reason to disqualify.

Yeah SD is still difficult, la city is rigged but you can go to the sheriffs instead of lapd for a ccw.
I dont deal with riverside sheriffs much but my understanding from people who do the qualification classes for them is that the current sheriff is pro ccw. Similar to orange county where they will accept hobbies, recreational reasons for issuing a ccw.

I want to say the current sheriff of riverside campaigned on issuing more ccws.

Edit: here is the sheriffs statement from his campaign page,
    "SECOND AMENDMENT
I am a firm believer in our Constitution, particularly the Bill of Rights. I believe the only thing that can protect the First Amendment is the Second. I also believe it has two distinct parts: the right to keep, and the right to bear. Although California is a “may” issue state, my position aligns more with “shall.” I believe that every person who desires a concealed weapons permit, otherwise not prevented by law or psychological concern, should be granted a permit."

I can confirm that your statements re: Riverside County are true. Hobbies and well articulated defense arguments are accepted as good cause. And you're also correct about the current Sheriff, Chad Bianco. To be fair, the previous Sheriff (Stan Sniff) was also just as pro 2A, and the conditions to issue permits were not modified once Bianco took over. However, Sniff was locked into a financial/political battle with the county board of supervisors, and claimed that there wasn't enough money to expand the CCW department to speed up the process. This led to many municipal Police Departments (including Murrieta, where I live) to issue their own CCW licenses for city residents, to avoid the Sheriff's department backlog. When Bianco was elected, the first thing he did was hire a bunch of contractors to work within the CCW bureau, and they blew through a 20 month backlog in about 3 months. My understanding is that current issue times are just a few months (well, pre-COVID, anyway). Here in Murrieta, it took me about 90 days to go through the PD's process, which has a few more steps than the county's process.

I’m sure there’s a thread that’s more appropriate to discuss the politics of CCW permits in California because this one is for sending love letters to other dudes that own small trucks
