Advantages of Synthetics

Just drove a new 09 double cab home from from the dealership so will have lots of questions. After reading here for a couple of weeks I know many are using synthetic motor oil. My question is why, is it better for the engine, longer between changes? Do you stop there with the synthetics or do you use them in the differentials, transfer case? Thanks in advance for the help.

 

I run synthetic in my vehicles. When oil change time comes around they sound way better. I used to put regular in my old 91 corolla, and I could tell when it needed a change. With the synthetic it sounded way better and much less reduction in power when it hit the 5000km mark.

I use just synthetic in the truck. Much easier on the vehicle in cold weather.

 

perhaps we could use a sticky with links to several sites where they give the benefits / downfalls of synthetic vs. dino. seems like at least once a week a new thread opens on the subject.

so how long can you actually go on synthetic? more then the dealer recommended 5000K? or theoretically as long as you can as long as the oil is clean and up to the fill line?

 

different people have different thoughts on how long to go on synthetic, but i always change mine every 5k miles. i could probably go longer, but 5k is good peace of mind for me.......and oil does get dirty.....no matter if it looks clean or not.

 

Just an FYI, not to be a know it all, but my mechanic friend who is a BMW, Merc and Mercedes shop owner told me that with the tacomas or really any toyo you should wait till roughly 10,000 until switching to sythentics to get the rings to seat better.

After that, he recommends mobil 1 or any other like it, Royal purple, redline etc...

 

^That's a myth. Tolerances in today's engines are so tight that that is an old wives tale at this point.

What about synthetic shell helix or total 9000 5W30, I don't find mobil1 in my country just shell and mobil in 5W30.Any thought on these engine oil?

 

Synthetics penetrate better and seep further into areas where conventional oils don't. Synthetics are better at cleansing your engine. Synthetics don't break down.....

It's peace of mind for me. All our vehicles get Mobile 1 - including the diffs/transfer case/transmissions (this 07 taco still have factory stuff in diffs/tranny/tcase).

I change it religiously at 5K miles - and it looks dark like chocolate everytime.

 

Better cold start circulation and longer change interval.I changed and added synthetics at 1000 miles or so in motor,differentials and transfer case..

 

Rings are not broken in at the factory. They would have to run them for hours and hours, which they don't.

However, everyone has their opinion. Mt taco will get synthetics after a proper break in at roughly 10,000 miles.

 

cams on LS1's in aren't fully broke in until 30k. Im sure the factory starts every motor, but I doubt they run them for more then 5mins. IMO nothing will be broken in from the factory these things take time. I bought my truck with 22k on it, but if it was new I would wait until 10k before running synthetic. Your really not gaining anything running synthetic so soon.

 

My favorite thing about synthetic motor oil is how well it flows in very cold temps. On a very cold night, take a bottle of conventional oil and a bottle of synthetic and leave it outside. In the morning you will be able to see the difference in flow rate just pouring it out of the bottle. Mobil 1, for instance, flows well down to -58 degrees F. If your truck stays outside all night like mine, you will want to use synthetic. JMO.

 

Just wondering, are there any cons to switching brands of synthetic? I used mobil 1 last oil change but at the nearest wal-mart they didnt have any so i bought castrol syntec.
