That trip it was between -10C and -15C, so between 5F and 14F. I had no issues until the temperature dropped low. All in all, it didn’t leave me stranded, but was a bit alarming, because at first I thought my T-case was just broken, which would have been very bad considering the snow-covered mountain pass I had to shoot to get out. After 20 minutes of warming up the truck, it shifted into 4WD like normal. I had shifted into 2WD to maneuver into a parking spot, and had left it in 2WD over night. The second time this happened, I put two-and-two together and realized I may have goofed up putting the 75/90 in there. On subsequent trips I have had the truck back in the same situations with no issues at all.

Just my experience. Take it for what it is. For what it’s worth, my dealer now stocks the Toyota LF fluid, when before they did not, so there must be other believers out there.

Just my 2 cents here. If you're having shifting troubles with the transfer case, it might be a problem with the t/c. I had Redline MT-90 (75w90 GL4) in my t/c last winter, and was up north for a few weeks. Temps were -45°C (-49°F) at night, -35°C (-31°F). No weird noises. Zero problems shifting.

get a refund and do it yourself. i don't know how you could trust a shop after them doing that to you. how you can fuck up something simple like a fluid change is beyond me. People are careless.

Wtf it’s diff fluid, thicker the better. The most reputable Toyota gearing shop on TW (ECGS) recommends SOLELY Lucas 75-140 non synthetic. Settle down peeps :headbang:

I don't know if I would be using a GL-5 fluid in the t/c though; really tough on the synchros.

I’m 99% sure they don’t use a brass synchro in the tcase. The tcase is the exact same it has been for almost 20 years and I’ve never heard anyone say it requires gl-4

I haven't seen the insides of a Toyota t/c, but my 4Runner's manual specifically said GL-4 only. From this I had assumed that there was some brass somewhere inside.

I’ve got one split open in my garage from when I did an fj swap, I don’t recall seeing any yellow metal in there. Regardless the people freaking out over 75-140 in it need to chill out.

Blasé, anecdotal attitudes towards specifications, amounts, standards in the automotive world are good-to-go. Thank heavens legal and medical professionals are above this.

Just added toolbox and roof-rack to haul my fishing boat 100's of miles into the backwoods every week. Goodrich K02s, Bilstein 5100 front and back, no lift.
I did change them myself several weeks ago. Just put in the same thing the local Toyota dealer here uses, which is 75w/90 which they put in all 3rd gen Tacomas. Just to be on the safe side. They do not use 75w. Mostly changed it so it would not affect my third party extended warranty.
