I notice that a lot of you don't use 0 or 5w-20 as recommended per the owner's manual? Do you guys switch weights according to season? Is it ok for me to use something a little heavier in the summer, like say 10w-30?

At 3500 miles with regular 5-20 oil and Toyota filter. As mentioned, most experts will tell you dino oil will not break down prior to the factory recommended 5000 mile interval under normal conditions.

For the amount of miles you drive, an investment in a couple of oil analysis would make sense. Unlikely you've used up the oil and additive packages by 5-6 miles. I would suggest going 6K, do an analysis, based on the results, go another 3-6K, analyze again, rinse, repeat,,, This will give you an idea of how long you can actually go.

With your miles a couple of analysis make $$$ sense, unlike most of us more "normal" drivers, or still under warranty. Also note that it will depend on which M1 you're using, if it's the older silver cap M1, this is no longer a true Group IV synthetic, but a G3 (hydrocracked dino) synthetic. If it's the Extended Performance, then your change milage should be able to be easily extended, but the EP is still not a true total G4 synthetic.

A true G4 synthetic should easily go 12-15K and probably more, but the true G4s are more limited; Amsoil, Redline, Shaefers (I think...). The vast majority of off-the-shelf "synthetics" are not true sythetics, but G3, which the FTC allows to be sold with the synthetic name. Only reason I bring this up is that if you truely want to go extended drain, then you must know what you're putting in.

I change my oil and filter every 5k miles. (Previously I was changing the oil every 3k and replace the filter every other oil change around 6k, but realized I was wasting good oil.) Chevron Supreme 5w30 dino oil, PureOne (soon to be Denso) oil filters.

EDIT: As of 12-15-2015, at 119,957 miles I am now using Mobil 1 5w30 "synthetic" oil and any premium oil filter on sale (NAPA Gold, WIX, PureOne, etc.), going 7500 miles between oil changes. I use rare earth magnets on the oil filter canister to catch ferrous particles in the oil and extend the life of the oil filter. My driving is 50/50 city/highway, very light service and not stressful on the oil.

I go 5k on conventional oil and use the cheap purolator filters. I had an oil analysis done and the results were that there was at least another 1k miles left on the oil at 5K (maybe 2K+ remaining life? I can't remember exactly but plenty of life left) Since the owners manual says 5k I will change it at 5k

My wife's honda has the oil change meter- tells % life remaining on the oil. I believe it looks at more than just miles- things like throttle position vs time or RPM vs time to measure how hard the engine is ran. I did an oil analysis on her car and the analysis agreed with the % remaining life on the readout. I have been changing that oil at 30% remaining life and it's like 7k miles. Same deal, conventional oil, cheap purolator filters.

Bottom line is people change oil WAY too often. Too many are still using the 1960s method of every 3k miles. Oil is better than it was 40 yrs ago and today's engines with EFI and unleaded gas are WAY easier on oil. But habits are hard to break. Maybe in another 20 yrs we'll learn.

habits and marketing. even when i had my oil done at the dealer, they would put that silly windshild sticker with a 3k interval.

You guys do know that new oil actually causes more wear than oil that has been aged a bit inside the engine? those hyper extreme changers are doing more wear to their engines.

Would a oil analysis be telling of the filter's condition? Or should the filter be replaced at a more frequent interval if the oil is to be left in for longer?

Hmmm... You should run a line from the engine pan drain hole into the differential case. Then you would never have to check the diff oil, it's always fresh. That would be awesome. :D

ABSOLUTELY! AMSOIL is what i use in both my 4 runner and as soon as my tacoma needs service this is the same i will use in it. It cost a bunch but if you do the math at the end of the year it cost less than jiffy lube every 3 k miles. :D
