My rack finally arrived from its 5500km journey from Meso to Me.

Very nice. I'm down for a set of hooks once you start selling then. Put me on the list, please.

Send me a DM, please. I think the right path forward is to perfect the single hex mounting plate instead of using my current triple plate. Then, use 3 singles per hook.

Current improvements. I have not posted these to my Google Drive just yet. I can print this current revision to make sure the hex chip snaps into place to minimize any play in the hole. I am waiting on the bolt and nut hardware to arrive early next week to make the final edits.

I think this is an awesome idea! May I suggest a thought though. Most rain coats are super lightweight these days (yours seems pretty bulky though). Do you think a smaller hook (maybe only two hex plates) would work better? You could keep more room on the rack to mount other stuff:notsure:
I’d be in for some of those single plates for sure:thumbsup:

It is definitely a fair question and a great suggestion! My rain coat is super lightweight also, so its really just a matter of how small a hook will it stuff into (compress into). I will try a couple smaller revisions to how small of a footprint I can get it down to for a rain jacket like this. Thicker jackets might like the larger hook, so both options have application. Probably into next week for those revisions. The current hook takes about 10 hours to print!

The good news is, the back plate testers are on the printer today. They only take about an hour to print so I can do a few revisions per day. Those will get dialed in quickly, then.

Built a new ar for the rack. Fits much better. Trying to source a molle bag 12x11x5 if anyone knows one around that size

I wish I could do this in my truck... but in NJ, they'll be shooting my tires out and killing my dog if I even mention the possibility of something like this.

Install went pretty smooth, used the extra inserts to mount a fire extinguisher.

Latest Back Plate STL file is here https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1Jo04Zj-IT4MQuUFg_sxFiKQFwY8U0iZ7?usp=sharing
Snaps in tight for me. Testing the nut fitment now. Should work. Meant for M6x1.0 16mm bolt with nyloc nut.

I printed the smaller coat hook suggested by @Snowman7878 - it turned out well.
I realized looking at my printer that this smaller hook cost me $13 in filament alone. Each hex plate costs me about $1.40. That's about $36 for 4 plates, 2 hooks, and the bolts/nuts to go with. Before shipping. So yeah, I will just post the STL files. I'll set my website up to host these and other projects eventually, and plan to accept donations when that is up and running. Thanks!

Turned out well. I'll mount them up when the set finishes printing.

I’m not trying to give you a hard time, but if that is the thin stamped steel mount that came with the fire extinguisher, you are really pushing your luck.

    Few things:
    - those are designed to be used in the vertical position ONLY
    - there is only one ring and clasp, it’s off center and easily unlatched by vibration
    - you need to consider forces that would come into play in an accident, likely orders of magnitude greater than the weight of the unit

PLEASE remove that and secure with two points of contact and using some means of attachment that is designed for that orientation and is vibration resistant.

Don’t want to hear that coming loose and injuring/killing you :(

My suggestion is to get one of these and save room/weight and worries:notsure:
I’ve never actually had to use either kind, but the element ones don’t need to be recharged yearly:thumbsup:

Keep that heavy one in the bed somewhere.
Only time I ever used a old school fire extinguisher is when I was younger and got in a couple wars w/ friends!

Beefier bolts with nut, and countersunk hole to press said nut into, check! Thanks for the call out @MESO!

Definitely a space saver! Good suggestion @Snowman7878 !
Only got 1 mounted so far, the other is still on the printer. So this is new/small (closest) vs old/large (furthest):

Lastly, yes, I know, the bolts are chrome

I’ve actually been wondering how well the whole (non sunroof) Overhead Molle rack will hold up in a crash. Normally I wouldn’t think of such things, but with the kids riding in the back seat, the thought crossed my mind regarding how much force those jack nuts can handle. Anybody have any input or experience on this?

I was wondering the same but more related to the amount of weight is ok to put up there? Between the jack nuts and the headliner I’m guessing it shouldn’t be more than 40ish lbs:confused: I don’t think anything back there was designed to hold weight, especially under vibration. A mod like this is definitely a use at your own risk kinda thing
