Phony fog lights

I have a 2007 Taco that came without fog lights. While I don't want fog lights as they are useless as long as the headlights are on, I do feel that the front bumper looks as though it's missing something without them. I solved the problem by buying some orange reflectors at the hardware store and ground down their size to fit against the back of the empty fog light cup. A stainless sheet metal screw through the center holds it in place. Looks great for less than $10.

 

great idea for no fog lights

but i find them useful with the headlights

especially in crapy weather

 

I have always found the foglights help a lot in snow , and believe it or not , fog.

 

lol maybe you need to look up what fog lights are supposed to be used for....then you might find them useful in the correct conditions(fog).....just sayin

Years ago I installed some very fancy Marchall (sp?) fog lights in a Porsche 356 I owned. I was told that the advantage of fog lights in fog or snow was that the yellow color penetrated percipitation better and the low mounted fog lights had a sharp upper cut off so that the reflected light off the fog didn't blind you .The factory installation was such that they would only work with your headlights on low beam. Modern day fogs are usually white and only work with headlights on. Recently I have owned Subarus which came with fogs and I find that they were of very marginal value. But hey, if it works for you, enjoy.

The yellow light thing is a myth. Water droplets in fog, snow, rain, or any other form are too large to have a light wavelength from one color thru while reflecting another wavelength.
In fact- it can even hurt you light performance depending on how the light is colored yellow. If it is a sodium vapor type bulb...it EMITS yellow light. If it is a yellow lens on the bulb or on the housing it will filter out a small amount of the light emitted forcing the beam to APPEAR yellow. I'll admit- this part is miniscule effect.
In the end, you are right-If it works for you...Enjoy!!

 

I use my fogs all the time. But when they really come in handy, is when you have your high beams on.

 

hey good idea. how bout a picture? my 07 doesn't have fogs and i hate the holes in the bumper. i would rarely use fogs if i had them installed. almost asked "santa" for some just to fill in the holes. this should be lots cheaper. thanks

 

Completely agree. I wouldn't mind just putting a "dummy" set in and not wiring them up. I hate having the inserts, sort of ruins the whole truck. However, I DID choose the base model so it's on me...

Here's my cheap fix for the fog-light hole. I bought a couple of "Whelen" brand 2" LED round "compartment lights"....they fit right into the flat base of the fog-light blanks (I just epoxy'd them in) ....and I wired them into my corner lights so they are on whenever my lights are on....I only paid $40 for the pair off ebay....I see them for $30 each online. Here's a crappy pic of my truck cause its dark outside (they look off-center but they really arent)....but here's what the lights look like, and a link to a place that sells them.

They dont put out a lot of useful light...but they are bright enough to be seen....and since they are LED's they look great

 

I found fogs useful for lighting up the side of the road (curb, guardrail, debris...).

Federal regs (FMVSS) require the fogs to work only with headlights on. There was a batch of Ford Rangers wired incorrectly at the factory and the fog lights could be turned on independently. Ford actually had to issue a recall on it. Wonder how many owners followed the recall notice on that one.

 

Anybody ever try fogs alone in the really bad stuff, not on the road

 

I agree if you need/want them enjoy them, but have to disagree with how they are set to come on... You can always rewire them, it takes just a few minutes/hours depending on your skills. I only ask that people take a few things into consideration

 

I LIKE it. Looks like something I would do. I enjoy walking the aisles of Lowes or Home Depot looking for something I can use for an unintended purpose.
