My first 2nd gen was an '06 TRD offroad with access cab. I found first and reverse to be too tall. Also, when towing I found it the clutch weak(it would squeal) when taking off, especially if on an incline. I had the clutch checked out and it was fine. My current '13 Limited has the 5 speed and it is unstoppable. With over 600 lbs of tongue load and heavy trailers, it is easy to break traction so I have to take off gently. This is my first truck with automatic transmission and it is a good one. So if you plan on towing more then 3000 lbs, do yourself a favor and get the 5 speed auto.

I hate the way my 2014 6MT release bearing squeals. Wish I had got the 5 speed. Dropping down into 5th on the highway is not worth a bearing that fails at 100k.

I have a 2012 6speed with 123k on the original clutch and throw out bearing. It’s interesting a number of you guys are experiencing noisy throw out bearings, I’m sure my days are numbered but I have heard anything yet.

I bought my truck last year and the first things I did immediately were the following.
It shifts like a dump truck IMO which drove me nuts. I’ve been spoiled my whole life by silky smooth manual Honda transmission.

    1. Did the accumulator delete (have to bleed the clutch after this, so that was done as well)
    2. Adjusted the clutch pedal free travel
    3. Installed a new oem shifter seat (tried the Marlin Crawler delrin shifter seat, it was way too stiff getting into gear, stick with oem!)
    4. Switched over to Redline MT90 gear oil
    5. Installed a TRD short shifter.

After all that it only helped a little. The 2nd gens just have clunky manual trans. I drove a 2014 6speed with only 40K on the clock and it shifted like a dump truck as well.

I’m seriously debating on swapping in a 3rd gen 6speed trans when my clutch goes. :anonymous:

    Would a 3’rd gen 6MT mount up?

    And...

I've had 3 6-speed tacomas, '06, '14 and a '15. Never had a problem with any of them. But yes, short throw shifter is needed.

    Is your pathfinder a manual?

I have a ‘15 AC MT 4x4, and I’m always looking for 7th gear. I don’t know if it’s because I have a tow package but in 6th gear at 50mph I’m already at like 2k rpms. Highway speeds like 70-80mph I’m at like 2500 or 3000 rpms. In turn the gas mileage sucks.

would I do it again? I dunno. It’s what I’m stuck with for now so I’m trying to make the best of it.
