Where did I say anything about the luxury market? Count how many F150s are churned out every year. Now add up how many Teslas have ever been sold. People aren't taking out $1/2 billion short positions against Tesla because the outlook is awesome. The sharks are circling Elon and smell blood. EVs are the future. My argument was Tesla can not scale like the rest of the industry and has demonstrated that + almost failed during the model 3 push.

 

My 2016 doesn't even have power seats. But I didn't buy it for that. And as far as the last poster's issues with his F250. At least it existed and ford churned them out. In large numbers.

You just once again said that your argument is that Tesla cannot scale like the rest of the industry. Tesla is a luxury car maker and has successfully scaled to be the largest once. Your argument is demonstrably inaccurate. You are entitled to your own opinion but not your own facts.

Look at the amount of bs kick starter -“give us your money today” crap is out there now to buy an ev truck from a company that has nothing but a rendering of the product and maybe a prototype that they drag down a hill. What % of cars produced fit that definition? And they cant even get the model s and x refreshes out despite saying the lines are retooled and production has started. What happens when every luxury maker has ev offerings? Bmw alone came close to them. But i never said luxury segment and tesla is not targeting just luxury autos. The cybercrap is supposed to be the ford killer too. Porsche alone sold almost 250k cars in 2020. The world is moving to evs and the big guys can do scale that tesla can not handle. Only way to disprove is to come back to the thread in 4 years.

 

Tesla is 100% a luxury brand. The cheapest car they sell is $35k, the same as MB and BMW. The cheapest Ford or Toyota? $20k. Again you aren’t entitled to your own facts. Don’t get me started on production delays. How long has it been since a 4 Runner redesign? I’m pretty sure the Bronco will be due for it’s midcycle refresh before the first one is delivered. You’re just cherry picking data to support your view.

Blows me away that anyone would wish for the failure of a company that has come this far and employs this many people. Ford, Toyota get a pass on obvious shortcomings just for being big and Tesla gets nothing but vitriol? There are way more Tesla’s on the road than Rivians but they’re good even with no track record? Lack of shame is the least of your issues, there’s some serious reasoning disorder going on. I think “Batshit crazy” pretty much nailed it.

Just read that the Lightening range data was generated with 1000 lbs in the bed, something they don’t do for mpg ratings. So the 230 and 300 mile ranges will be more representative of when loaded and substantially higher when empty.

 

I heard the same thing. It will be interesting to see what real world range is.

 

This is from the article. I expect it’s for the larger 300 mile range battery.

I’m not too convinced on their range. I like the price point off cheapest model with $7500 federal tax break and $750 for PA residents. I would get the cheapest model with upgraded battery which I think is 4K more and can get on any model. I know someone who has the electric mustang and battery is not anywhere near advertised. I put 100 down on lightening but all depends on reviews of the range

Gonna be years and years man. That tech isn’t close yet.

 

The problem with solar for this type of vehicle is power density and trying to size for peak power demands. If you assume you need around 70 kW to support accelerating a truck to highway speed, you'd have to be carrying an array of 200 300-watt PV modules. Each one weighs about 40 lbs and is around 20 square feet. Any they only generate close to nameplate power when perfectly oriented towards the sun.

Most people don't exclusively drive during peak insolation, so there's no current way to get away from an onboard battery in that scenario with a vehicle like that.

Charging in a reasonable amount of time also requires a large surface area of modules. With a lot of simplifying assumptions, let's say you want to charge a 100 kWh battery in 30 minutes. You need to charge at an average rate of 200 kW.

Again, for a 300W module, under ideal conditions (i.e., not real world), you'd need more 666 modules to charge at 200 kW without battery storage onsite. So, ideally your charging station incorporates some type of energy storage and you can draw from that rather than oversizing PV for the occasional peak demand.
