Kohler Command quick oil change drain plug.

The plastic gets brittle, then you get a constant oil leak and that oil gets everywhere.

I removed the little bastard with force. Replaced it with an 18" hydraulic hose with a cap.

 

These old Wisconsins have a plunger oil pump. Always a good idea clean the check valves as they can stick.

Look at the massive counterweight opposite the pistons. Tapered roller bearings support the crankshaft.

The red is Gyptal paint -- shows the extra quality and effort Wisconsin went to to make these the best HD air cooled engines built.

 

The tone of your post suggests you spent quite a bit of time cleaning said mess up.

It's mostly for my father in law to use. My in laws will be mostly living at our new property. It is a bit of a surprise gift for him. He'll be super excited. He can't wait to putter around the new property.

 

Here you can see the camshaft driving the oil pump. On the other piston side there is a lobe to drive a fuel pump, this engine has a gravity tank.


The oil pump drive is in the center in this pull back view. Notice the oil pump pick up has a wire holding the screen.

 

This thing is massive inside, here is an overall.
You can see the extra camshaft lobe for the optional fuel pump in the upper right along with the opening in the block for the arm.

53.9 cubic inches = 883 CC or .8 liter for you metric folks -- or not old enough to have grown up with 289, 383, 455, etc.

 

RustyGreen, you'd like my old 50's Curved dash Olds replica made from the plans that used to be sold out of the back of the old Popular Mechanics/Science magazines. I had it given to me a couple decades ago and yanked the motor, went thru it [small 1950's B&S] went thru the chassis and suspension [transverse leaf springs], redid the rims and tires, checked the brakes and the cables that operate them and fired it up and took it for a couple trips around the lake. Figured what were the police going to do if I got stopped, write me a ticket for operating a ''horseless carriage? And I will tell you this, there is a reason why tiller steering didn't hang around for long...........Yeesh.

We measured ‘em all sorts of ways. The big stationaries had variable clearance pockets so displacement changed all the time. Kinda Cool how the same things are measured around the World different.

 

Was this a way to give a "larger" or "smaller" engine as the demand changed? What controlled it? What did the engines drive?

Controls compression ratio depending on the calorific value of the natural gas in this situation. Uses the same fuel as its pumping.

Or, like my Dad who grew up on a farm until they lost it in the great depression, when we drove by a farm, would take a deep breath, exhale and exclaim, ''just smell the fresh air!!'' All the while, us kids in the back were gagging at the stench of cow poo............

Here they fertilize some fields with the liquefied "stuff", high (100+ feet, arc into the sky). Most people say ".............ah smells like money..........". No, it smells like a wall of sh$#, especially in the summer when the windows are open and it creeps in after midnight.

Funny you mention that. I grew up in PA farm country and thought nothing of it. Was the seasonal aroma in the Spring and early Fall. Moved away to the Deep South for many years where they didn't do this in my area. Moved back and I can oddly say I missed that smell.

Except when they use that rotted vegetable crap, yea now that stuff is nasty!

 

Now pig farming.................that's whole different animal. I love prosciutto, speck, ham, bacon, pulled pork, pork chops, tenderloin, pork roast, ribs, sausage............ The stink and the suckers will eat you if you go down in the pen. But that stink is most memorable, just shy of a human septic, just short of cat crap.

 

Anyone have experience with Bosch fuel injection on Kohler Command engines?

Ran fine when I started it long enough to move it outside.

Started it 5 hours later to move it inside. It died out after 15 seconds of running. Tried to start it and it would stutter and try to start. Tried this a few times and now it just turns over.

Acts like it's out of gas.

Gonna drain both tanks and check for water when I get a chance.
