^^^ I've been hearing the same thing. Better go buy a prius while they are still offering a rebate. Soon the stealerships will have a $1000+ markup and will screw us when we trade our trucks in. Cant wait (sarcasm).

You guys complain about 4 bucks a gallon... Our dollar is at par, and gas here is 1.22/litre (3.8 litres/US gallon), or 4.64/gallon. I work close to the border, so I pop over for gas. It saves me $30/tank!

There's a lot of evidence to suggest that it was skyrocketing gas prices that triggered the recession. Suddenly people used to paying $200 a month on gas were paying $500 a month, not to mention those skyrocketing gas prices drove up the prices of all other consumer goods, including food. And suddenly you needed another $5000 - 6000/yr gross simply to cover your costs.

Sure, you can cut back your discretionary spending. But not much on food, and you gotta get to work, which means you gotta buy that gas. That money has to come from somewhere, and for millions that meant defaulting on mortgages that most were barely carrying (and should never have received) as is. Enter the Great Recession.

So honestly if gas heads back up towards $5/gallon, expect round #2 on the Great Recession. People aren't in any better shape now then they were then. Many in fact are far worse. Just consider that 22% of mortgage holders in this country now owe MORE on their homes than their homes are worth. That's a telling number. And few of us have received any kind of raise (or even cost of living increases) in the last 3 years, even though the cost of goods continues to rise.

Meanwhile the income gap continues to grow. In 1980, the top 0.01% (aka the "super rich") of the country made 200 times the average salary of the bottom 90%. By 2006, that number was 976 times the average salary of the bottom 90%. Any guesses when it was last near that large of a descrepancy? 1928 ... just before the Great Depression, when it was 892 times. Of course THAT time around, there was a MASSIVE correction, and by 1932, the top 0.01% were earning just 400 times as much. By 1950, they were down to earning about 190 times as much.

This time around, however, the government by and for the corporation bailed the super rich out. There as of yet has been no significant correction, and sooner or later those government bills will come due. Guess who's gonna pay them.

    Now that's news that sucks.
