I talked to my friend out here that welds and fabricates (made my swingout) and he advised against patching the roof by welding over it. Recommended the rivnut route sealed with RTV so I'm probably going to do that instead.

Like JBweld? We talked about that yesterday but couldn't it crack or split with the flex of the roof?

No, that would be bondo, I'm certain the epoxy would stay in place and the metal would wrinkle up around it if it came to that somehow

Put some deep scratches around the hole on the inside before applying it

The good thing about using rivnuts is that if I ever did want to put roof rails on it again I could bolt them into the rivnuts.

That was what my welder friend was saying when I asked if he could weld over them and grind it flat. Said he could but it wouldn't come out looking great even if it is just the roof. Rivnuts will at least look clean even if they are apparent. And give the option to mount to the roof again if I ever wanted to... But I doubt it

I had the dealer do my brothers Tundra carrier bearing and ujoints. Rear u joint was going out and cb had seen better days. Wish I could’ve done it for him since the bill was $805 with the spicer parts I provided.

Fucking ouch, just for labor? I guess ujoints are probably more work but I can't imagine it would take a mechanic more than an hour to do the carrier bearing, and by that I mean rounding up to an hour

I guess u joints ran it up. They said they ran into "complications" that drove labor up. Dealers around here have always been slimy with me. But the local shops are ten times worse.

The reality is the lady talking to me had no automotive repair knowledge so if she wasn't going to let me speak with a mechanic then there was no point arguing. And I'm too busy to dispute with them right now.

At ACE hardware looking for rivnuts and no one here knows what they are, they're looking at me like I'm making shit up lol. Didn't see them with the regular rivets. Guess I'm going to order them off Amazon.

Guy who used to work an an Ace here:

If you really want to order from them, request to see their Hillman catalog. Then you'll have to look em up under specialty fasteners. They technically sell em but none of the ones I've ever set foot in actually stock em

Well it works, but it's an old incandescent bulb from over 50 years ago.

Be cool to have a modern setup inside with some kind of Cree LED.

I'm just using them to plug holes in the roof, gonna plop them in with some RTV then tighten them down with slim head bolts
