Toyota tech said my tran fluid is fine at 102,000 miles

I left my truck over night at my local dealership to do my transmission flush,oil change,rear end change,and radiator fluid change. He did everything except the transmission flush, he said the fluid was fine and in good shape. I have never touch nor changed the transmission fluid. Is this normal? What's your thoughts on the transmission?

 

I would have them change it. It was origionally listed to change it ever 100k then they lowered it down to 60k. IMO Id change it if you have the cash to blow

 

I would suggest you change the fluid sounds like he just didn't want to do the service I changed mine at 30,000 miles.

 

Toyota dealer here told me not to even start thinking about changing mine until at least 100,000 miles. If they checked it and say it's good then their probably right. I'd get mine changed anyway though just because I like to take care of the truck.

IMO, the dealership (aka Toyota Service Dept.) probably does not want the liability of a transmission flush and fluid change at 100,000 miles.

Some Toyota dealers do NOT want to touch that sealed transmission (at any mileage) unless it malfunctions.

That OEM transmission fluid is "dino based" too ... (now at 20K) doing mine at around 30,000 ...

If the dealers won't touch the transmissions before the 100,000 miles just tell them you do alot of towing and Toyota says 60,000 miles.

 

The guy servicing my tacoma let me chill next to my truck and he showed me the fluid. Iam no expert but it looked fine to me. But still I should of had him change it. My service tech guy has a X-runner,he was asking about all my mods on my truck. I told him to join Tacoma World. He really liked my gauges (there blue &white). Well I should had him change it. I guess I will be making a appointment next week.

 

I think the whole no trans fluid change thing is BS. There's clutches in there, clutches wear, clutch material goes into the pan, then the filter. Even if the fluid stays cool enough to not break down, what about all the crap in the filter? Seems like eventually the filter will clog or be bypassed and that can't be good. Mine is a stick, but will be serviced every 30K anyway just to get any wear particles out of the trans. I've never let an auto trans go past 30k without a fluid and filter change.

 

The dealer could tell me that the tranny fluid tasted like pussy but I'd still change it. I'm of the opinion that you have to do what YOU think is right and if you have any doubts have it changed. Some people are just lazy and some are stupid so I relay on my instincts in situations like that. I'd have it changed. If the dealer won't do it have a good Toyota mechanic do it.

 

Mine has 115k on it and it's never been touched either. It shifts perfectly fine. The problem with doing a transmission flush on higher mileage trucks with no previous service is that all that friction material from the clutches is all through the transmission now, some of it suspended in the fluid. If you do a true flush some of that can get dislodged and can wind up in places you don't want it, and it could cause more problems or even a transmission failure. I know a lot of people who have had this happen with other makes of vehicles that were fine before the service. What I plan on doing is a less intrusive drain and top off. I'm going to drain it, pull the pan, clean the pan and filter, put it back together and top it off following the stickied thread here on the top off procedure. Then i'll repeat the drain and top off a few more times over the next few oil changes. My 4 Runner had flushes every 20-30k before we bought it at 71k miles in 02. It's got 205k on it now and it shifts perfect and the fluid looks/smells perfect and I haven't touched it since we bought it with the exception of adding about 1/2 a quart after removing the radiator during a timing belt change. But it's got a dipstick too so you can actually check it.

 

They're a Toyota dealership for god sake....... If they don't or can't perform a transmission flush on their own equipment, then who else is there? Total BS if you ask me (if that's their excuse). It's called maintenance for a reason!

Sure.....deny customers a transmission flush at 100K miles so when they reach 110K miles....the tranny shits the bed and now they'll be charging you 5X the cost to replace the transmission.

 

Drain and refill. I wouldn't do a flush.

 

I've always heard flushes are bad for high milage auto transmissions as well.

By the way I like your truck. Are the headlights cleared out? It goes really well with white. Looks really clean!

 

My dealer told me they do it at 100,000 miles and it is the complete flush. Cost is $180 bucks

 

I've had 2 dealer techs and both parts guys at my local dealer tell me it's way safer to do a drain and fill on one that hasn't been touched north of 100k.

 

dealer probulary does not know how to flush and refill it......
they rather run it till it blows....job security

 

Ya makes me wonder should I have the complete flush done around 50k or so miles? Idk.. just a thought.

 

Normally if you have regular flushes every 30-50k or so you can just continue to do so. You just don't want any crap getting into the valve body or other areas it shouldn't be in.

 

Anybody out there just drain the pan and replace the gasket & filter yourself?
I had a 1992 Toyota deluxe w/ auto trans. and never did anything more than that in 201,000 trouble free miles. The pan doesn't look any different on this 2001. Frankly I don't get the "sealed" part.

 

... ^^^ ... Ditto I don't get the "sealed part" either. ... My friend has a 2010, V-6 and he dropped the pan at 25,000, drained and refiled the transmission. I think he filled it to maybe the overflow plug hole ? I know he had to hand pump the fluid in.

Whatever he did, the transmission works fine and he is getting ready to do it again at 50,000 miles.

I am with all those out there who believes in changing any and all fluids (dino & syn) often ... even before Toyota says so.
