Not random, rather ironic, as we have two on order and my SO worked on it and the revised T6 architecture for both Ranger and Bronco, which now has room for V-configuration power trains and not inlines. One for each of us. First Edition 4dr 10AT, then 2dr Badlands 2.3 7MT for me. Will still keep all my trucks.

2nd generation Tacoma ran 1 month short of 11 years from October 18, 2004 to September 10, 2015 and was no longer being offered as of January 1, 2016. I've said numerous times on here, it will be redesigned in 2.5 to 3 years, very dependent on delays and hiccups now, not so much deliberate product planning scheduling that somehow a few continue to think equates to 2025.

Let this chip shortage last another 18 months, then it will become a MY 2025 vehicle. Toyota is shockingly committed to retaining the December launch date for the 2022 Tundra, so there is no reason for the current crisis to be affecting the less complex 2024 Tacoma, which is at best using a small mule fleet right now at R&D centers in Aichi and Hokkaido. For the time being, it's 2024. I have seen nothing but 2024 for the past 16 months.

??? Never has been of concern to me I guess, so I couldn't have answered that, sorry. I have never bothered to inquire about any new TRD Pro color any year and someone already addressed that IIRC awhile back for MY 2022. Looking at the date, I am probably too late.

I never focus on such details as stuff like color changes year-to-year, as personally new paint doesn't fascinate me oddly enough. Would be weird of me to even ask, as one might as well wait and not ruin a surprise. Ask too many questions, you attract a bad response from key Toyota people.

I am more about other core aspects such as life cycle cadence/management, Job 1 & EOP dates, powertrain, body, interior and structural design changes, infotainment & NVH improvements, suspension, drivetrain, and etc. '22 TRD Pro info should be out there already in some form, so sorry I couldn't help.

Maybe out of left field, but what are the thoughts on getting a first MY Tundra? On one hand, I've been reading about all the problems with the 2016 Tacomas. On the other hand, all the 2016 Tacomas are still driving...

Only bad part about getting first MY Tundra is having all the previous gen owners say how far superior their truck is.

I usually wouldn't want to say this, in not being scared of first MY woes, but with the level of changes, you are definitely taking a chance. The subsystems and some components for the 780B Tundra program, probaby predate it by itself and that is one major Toyota strength, which helps to mitigate any potential issues with new vehicles.

Toyota has delayed it by a lot already, but there will always be teething issues initially, especially on the level of what they are doing. All new frame, new powertrain application and all new THS powertrain. A lot of new everything, so while I imagine they've done their best to engineer out any potential programs and streamline the transition, this stuff will always happen.

No offense to Mike, but he did develop the current Tacoma under 989A from 2011 to 2015 as chief engineer. He is also in charge of the Tundra 780B program and next Tacoma (920B). He works with Japan HQ directly on these vehicles (more than the 3rd gen) and lived in Japan from 2017 to 2019, to finesse some things. It's going to be great and not as problem laden as the mostly Ann Arbor/Detroit developed 2016 Tacoma. I wouldn't let myself touch a Tacoma until MY 2020, when it hit midcycle and fixed certain issues.

Agree ... if I like the new Tundra, will wait until at least MY 2025 before purchase. Still enjoying current model but excited to see changes.

    FYI:

    I never explicitly pointed out:

    • 780B = '22 Tundra
    • 660B = '23 Sequoia
    • 920B = '24 Tacoma
Those codes, will tell you a lot before market launch of each, even though 90% of previously accessible info per prg. code has been guardingly scrubbed from the net.

Only have such info on Toyota vehicles built in the North America on TNGA-F. There are other Toyotas, but I doubt that they have any relevance to Tacoma owners.

2022 models should be in showrooms in 3 1/2 months.

Any inside on the teaser image of two new wheels? I'm guessing lime rush (already leaked for 4runner) TRD PRO with some updated wheels and a heritage edition model with the updated bronze wheels based on the similarity to the heritage Land Cruiser wheels and 25 years nonsense. Considering pulling the trigger on a LR PRO at MSRP but maybe wait for these two or just wait for MY2024. Thanks as always!

Nah, not that I recall? 25 years celebration with Heritage Edition seems very belated for a truck introduced in March 1995, in being 26.5 years later this September. The TRD and PreRunner were introduced in July 1997 as a 1998 models, when they refreshed it 9 months after the 2WD and added a passenger airbag (first time) and ditched sealed beams for composite (like '97 2WDs in Oct 1996).

1997 MY had no special changes, other than the October 1996 arrival of the refreshed Tacoma 2WD. 20 years ago was the 2002MY, with no changes. '03 Model Year in late 2002 (19 years) was the last update of any notability, before Gen 2 in late 2004. Heritage Edition could be related to the 1998 model or Tacoma nameplate for 1995, but held back until now.

Heritage Edition Land Cruiser was rolled out in October 2019, 61.5 years after the 1958 USA intro of Land Cruiser. This is to celebrate the Tacoma launch, 1.5 years late (like HE LC200) and sell for 2 MYs, before end of production. Matches up real well, as the LC HE was sold like that for both 2020 and 2021 MYs. Seems like for Tacoma, maybe it will be 2022 and 2023MY?

I never really asked about new trim levels (except power train changes) and colors to be honest (I hate asking directly, truth to be told), as I stick to background info in terms of logistics.

Generally I have only known MY 2022 is what can be described as a "minor update", like 2018 was and not like 2020 (the half point). Plus wind down of TMMTX Tacoma production.

The very few Toyota people I have banter with from NBCA, TX, and TTCAA, probably might not even trust me as a blue oval suit in prd. planning nowadays (even with a few Toyotas in the stable). Hopefully I'm just being paranoid and I can PM the necessary info, if I do get it before the embargo ends. I love both companies, even if I work for only one of them, but Toyota takes very seriously who is getting their info and who is giving it out even more within their organization. Down in DBMI, they still could connect me to this handle, let alone Toyota.

I just wish Toyota would make it possible to special order manual transmissions in all models of Tacoma’s. Some of us enjoy driving a vehicle not just riding in.
Plus I *think* they should come back out with a little regular cab because so many small & large business like using small trucks.

So few drive manual anymore that Toyota only offers it in upmarket trims where they can now command a premium. The next Gen Tacoma I fully expect the manual will be eliminated....especially if the powertrain is Hybrid or electric.

I expect the 4th gen Tacoma to be a variant of the Corolla Cross Hybrid with a small bed outback.

Agreed. The styling is just off on the tundra. It looks taller than it should in the grill, when it should have a more horizontal styling. IDK, but the tundra styling is just bad IMHO.

If the tundra was much prettier, it would sell better. Nothing is more important than styling.

I've waited 3 months for my ordered Tacoma and have yet to receive allocation date (wait another 4-6 more weeks from that date). Should I just pull out and wait for the 2022 model at this point? Haha

High resale values on a clean 2015 vs comparable 2016 do show most people would rather have the last year of the previous gen. The 2016 had quite a few issues starting out. I expect the new Tundra will be the same way.

4Runner has been delayed over 1 year due to new powertrain, allegedly, which Tacoma will share and factory location of TMMGT. Y'all might be looking at MY 2025 due to this delay.

All 2021 models have been built as of 2 weeks ago IIRC. 2022s begin production August 2nd I believe.

He probably means VIN numbers assigned since thats earlier in the process or yours will end up showing up a 2022, which some have had happen in prior years.
