The SKINNY on skinny tires

The price isn’t bad, I’ve been watching some reviews and everyone seems to like them so far.

 

Found any reviews that aren't thinly veiled marketing? I want to like these.

 

Well it's a brand new tire offering from a small tire shop that makes pretty niche tires. That said, I trust them enough as a company to buy them as my next set of tires if their 16" offerings are good this fall.

 

Just ordered LT AT III's for my ACLB in 265/70/17. Super excited for them to arrive! Will post pictures when they are on

 

I actually don't have that much for pics, but you can find some in the Toyo at3 thread. I went from the 265/70r17 KO2 to the 255/80r17 toyo and while it's not a drastic difference in power, it is noticable despite going down fairly significantly in rim weight. It's totally fine as is for me, but if I were running heavy or pulling heavy loads here in the mtns I'd definitely regear.

 

I finally got myself some pizza cutters. Had a set on the truck when I got it a decade ago and stupidly put bigger tires on only to find out it he on and off road performance was severely diminished. Can’t wait to throw some
Mud on my truck on my hunting trip this weekend!

The tires are iron man all country m/T’s in LT235/80r17, load range e 10 ply tires. I drive about 300 miles a day so I wanted something more puncture resistant that would hold up to some abuse and not break the bank. I’m saving up for a set of higher end tires as we speak along with a lift, so If I get 1-2 years out of these I’ll be content with how little money I had to spend on these.

i feel like pizza cutters are the best choice for reg cab 4x4’s.

 

stupid question but will the 2020 TRD Pro wheels accept the skinny tires?

 

yes they will my wheels are the same specs, 17x7” and the ultra skinny 235/80r17’s fit great. Almost like that size wheel was made for pizza cutters

 

I wonder if I need to trim anything. I mean I already have that 1 inch lift from the factory. I love the look of the skinny, but the trimming is something that im kinda meh about

 

You won’t need to trim if you go with 235/80r17’s. I have zero lift and zero rubbing even at full lock

 

I just bumped into this article off a Pinterest Tacoma theme. I have been a tall&thin advocate for years. Mainly because living in Montana it was my experience that they were better for snow use. And I thought they were a tough mountain tire here too. Not much in the way of sand dunes or beaches in MT. I use to run 7.50/16 back in the day, but nowadays it is 235/85/16.

 

So I thought skinnies were the way to go because of the lighter weight. ST Maxx 255/80/17 are 51 lbs. BFG KO2 255/75/17 are 46 lbs. But then I saw Toyo Open Country AT3 had a 285/70/17 that were 47 lbs., in load range (SL) or standard load. Does the wider tire make that much of a difference even if the weight is the same or very similar?

 

the toyo you mentioned is SL. Rather get the 255 in E load (if you plan to tow a lot and offroad). How heavy is the Toyo AT3 in 285 e load?

 

The 255 E load is 53 lbs, 285 E load is 56 lbs. I don’t tow or go off road other than the occasional fire service road and the beach, which is why I would be ok with the SL load rating.

 

To add another in the mix, SL rated 255/75R17 Cooper Discoverer AT3 4S comes in at 39 lbs.

 

Since you mention sand use, the wider tire will likely be a bit better since wider contact patch will “float” more on the surface rather than dig in with the skinnies.

how much of a difference? I don’t know, I’ve always run 285/70 but I am considering skinnies for my next set.

 

I think you should look at the cooper at3 4s. I've had them on my truck and they look great. Offroaded them about 4 times. Great on highway with rain

 

My experience also. Capable tire that I pushed to the limits on some rocky terrain in Nevada. Also been a great daily driver set used in snow/slush in PA

 

Just curious... why the switch to 255 from 285?

 

The cooper AT3 4s does sound good at 39 lbs. But it only comes with the white letters .. I think, not sure.
