So what exactly do they have to do? They have to scan the sensors first then program them?

that scanner they used, that you showed the pic of. did they walk to each sensor and "trigger" them. If they did, and it didn't show up, then the sensors are bad. If they didn't trigger the sensors and program them into the ECU, that needs to be done first.

I have no idea man, he did walk to each tire and hook up the machine but then came and told me that no sensor detected and one sensor was saying not compatible or something like that

try another guy, i guess. tell them you put on new wheels and the TPMS sensors need to be programmed.

The sensors have id's. These id's must be programmed manually into the tpms ecu. You can read the id off the sensor or get it with the right scan tool. If you didn't send your current sensors' id's to the place you purchased the new ones to have them cloned then nothing is programmed to work. So, therefore, nothing should be working.

That makes a lot sense. No I didn’t send nothing to them besides my year, make, and model. But as for the sensors, they need to be scanned first then they can be programmed?

First, you need to have the correct sensors for your truck. The tool that you pictured should be able to detect them if they are correct. It will display the I.D. numbers of the sensors (as well as tire pressure, temp. and battery status).

Once you have the I.D. numbers, you need to program them into the truck's computer using a tool that plugs in to the OBDII port under the dash.

Well that’s the thing, the tool that I pictured wasn’t detecting the sensors at all

Hmm interesting. Americas tire/discount tire does a TPMS relearn for free. This is just to program the sensors to the truck. I’ve switched tpms now 3 times and every time they reprogramed them for free (tire light came on before each time I took it in)

if the relearn tool isn’t detecting the sensors there may not be any in there. What does your valve stem look like? Almost all tpms will have a collar either black or silver and nut at the bottom. Shouldn’t look like a plastic valve stem

    Picture?
And do you have information on what tpms sensors you bought? They are 315MHZ and for aluminum wheels right? Otherwise they won’t communicate with Tacoma’s regardless. 3rd gen tacos are super specific and if it’s just standard 315MHZ tpms the tire pressure read outs usually don’t work (4runner tpms etc don’t work). Usually only OEM tpms will give the appropriate tire pressure read outs. I ran 2nd Gen tacoma sensors for a while. While they didn’t set off any tire pressure light problems, it didn’t give the tire pressure read outs on the dash (can’t remember if the SRs have this feature anyway)

I have bought two different sets of used wheels, one with 2nd Gen TPMS and the other set off a 2nd Gen from a ‘14 T4R Pro and neither set work in my ‘17 TRDOR. All were 315MHZ. The T4R sensors do work with the 2nd Gen Tacoma’s.
2nd Gen shows a light on the dash if there is a tire low.
3rd Gen show each tires psi in the dash and triggers the light if low. Very different system than the 2nd Gen.

The sensors in the new wheels may not be programmed with an id number. You may need to copy the id numbers from your old wheels and program them into the new sensors. Or if the tpms tool can create an id you can just use that function. Once all sensors have a functioning number loaded into them you can now learn that id number into the trucks computer.

Or the new sensors are not capable with the truck regardless of what you do. In that case try and install all your old sensors in the new wheels

Might be time to take your old wheels into a shop and have them swap the oem sensors to new wheels. Then you could send the old ones back with a bill for the labor to swap them and hope they pay it.

What kind of sensors/where did you get them?

I know from my reading that sometimes new sensors are shipped "asleep" to help preserve battery life. Even if they have ID #s there might be a procedure to activate them before the scan tool can read them.

Take a picture of the air stem for us so we can see if its a TPMS or just a standard valve stem .

Some replacement tpms sensors use a standard looking valve stem.
