Where did you mount your fire extinguisher?

I had to remove the storage bin behind the seat in order to trim and drill it a bit. Here's my writeup:

 

Yep. Added speakers to the back for tailgating and the drive-in theater. There hooked up to an amp behind the rear seat and a push button toggle to turn them on when needed.

 

Well we played with a Hyundai sedan tonight. The scenario we used was an engine compartment fire with the hood down. This is typically what we have on arrival. This vehicle’s design does not allow easy access to the engine compartment with the hood down. Based on the how the Element 50 did, it seemed to just piss off the fire. It also appears to be exothermic when in operation. I put it against the gap between the headlight and the hood and it started to melt the headlight plastic. Mind you as per protocol, I was wearing full structural gear and SCBA, so I was able to get closer than someone in plain street clothes. The car was still burning, so we went to the dry chem and that couldn’t completely extinguish the fire. The hose line had to be used finally to extinguish the fire. Of course the hood had to be forced open with a pry tool to completely put out the fire. It was an interesting test. I’ll post a link once my son has the video finished. Now if the vehicle design allows you to access the engine compartment with the hood down, you may have a chance, but I would go with a 100 vice 50. I don’t plan on buying another one. My chief was not impressed either.

 

It seems like the optimal location to me. Minimal risk of someone accidentally activating it, out of direct sunlight, keeps a crash-rated structural component (the seat back) between you and the extinguisher in case of a violent front-end collision... the list goes on, really.

Really nice work! Did you just get rid of the inverter outlet in the bed? In 3 years I have only ever charged a camera with it, and I'm giving serious thought to just replacing that outlet with something more useful like a Blue Sea panel similar to yours.

Yeah, I just unplugged it. I kept the inverter part incase I want to go back. In 13 years of owning a 2nd gen Tacoma and this one, I only used it once to try out. I had my friend 3d print the panel for the switchs. I'll be using the 12v socket to run my dometic fridge while driving then switching to my bluetti when I get to camp.

 

Sorry I can't help you with how it's wired, I had someone else do that. I cut the holes in the back of the bed for the speakers and had the toggle switch made.

 

I mean is the speaker in closed so water can’t get in

 

I have a Sungtop Rebel camper shell so there protected from the rain. If you don't have something similar, you could get marine speakers instead so there waterproof

 

I have a shell and a bed rug , but the tires kick up water in the fender well .

I cut the straps on the back and bolted it to the mounting plate with three screws and fender washers, then lined the holder with some Home Depot foam rubber weatherstripping (just so the screw heads don't dig into the cylinder wall).

I went with the Desert does it mount, I'm pretty happy with it. It's well made, easy to access and I don't notice it when I'm driving. I went with the 2.65" model, my only complaint is its tough to find a reasonably priced extinguisher to fit this mount. Also, the seat jackets rock.

Hi. Late to the party as your video was taken down. "but I would go with a 100 vice 50" Did you mean to type "but I would go with a 100 vs 50"? If you mean go with the Element 100, why would it be better than the 50?

No. And that was due to the longer runtime and larger quantity of chemical. Personally I do not plan on buying another. I'm sticking with the dry chems I keep on my truck.

Personally, I won’t carry a fire extinguisher in cab. If it comes loose inside, it’s a heavy projectile easily capable of killing you and anybody else in the vehicle. Also, I won’t carry an ABC dry chem in cab because an accidental discharge will be an enormous mess. And for those who espouse clean agent extinguishers in a vehicle, sure, they’re exactly that -clean- but one must consider that a clean agent needs to be contained in place for it to be most effective. There’s a reason why one of the most important aspects of inspecting a clean agent-protected room is verifying the integrity of the room seal(s). We literally use large door fans to pressure test clean agent-protected rooms to ensure this. If the agent escapes, it’s not going to extinguish anything.

A clean agent extinguisher could work well for an electrical fire, but it would be mostly ineffective on a petroleum-based fire. There are highly specific reasons that fire codes call for foam/liquid/powder agents to be used in environments where petroleum fires are a threat. Also consider that with clean agent, once it’s fully deployed, it’s gone and there is no residual fire suppression capability, unlike a chemical that remains and can continue to suppress.

FWIW, fire protection has been my career for 20 yrs now and I hold countless professional certifications.

I keep a 2.5lb Amerex ABC Dry Chem in a Kolpin Rhino Grip Flex 3” mount attached to the MOLLE rack in my bed.

Also, if you’re interested in utmost integrity from your extinguisher, inspect it yearly. At 6yrs, it needs an internal inspection/refilled/repressurized/rebuild. At 12yrs or if deployed, the cylinder itself needs to be hydrostatically tested and the same 6yr inspection steps accomplished before being reused. Most fire code compliant owners simply buy a new extinguisher every 6yrs and bypass the service intervals.
