I posted this on another thread but just saw this one and thought I'd re-post it....................

I have a 2017 super white Tacoma, has 12,400 miles on it, washed it last week and paint started coming off around the driver's side rear window, looks like crap. Went by the dealer, service manager said it's out of warranty but they would start a file on it and make some calls. They also suggested I contact Toyota Customer Care which I did. I emailed them and they emailed me back and asked me to call them. I called and talked to a nice young lady who said she would send it on up the line and I should get a phone call back in 24 hours, been 48 hours no call yet. Toyota sent a survey email tonight wanting me to let them know about my recent contact with customer care so I was able to write a book and tell them everything. Hopefully I'll get a call tomorrow, if not, I'll be calling them again on Monday. I bought a Land Cruiser in 1993 and have owned Toyota trucks, 4runner, and Cruisers since but if they don't take care of this, don't know how loyal I'll be in the future. I'm hoping for the best, just wished I hadn't bought a white Tacoma. I also have a 2015 super white Tundra TRD Off Road, just like my Taco, never had one paint problem with it. If I do buy another one, it won't be white.

I don't know a lot about paint so hope this isn't a dumb question. When I get the paint fixed, if I have my truck ceramic coated, will that help keep it from doing it in the future?

Find out who the body shop guy is at the dealer who deals with toyota for repairs and bug him. The service manager will likely screw with you. The manager at my local dealer (auburn toyota) made a big show of the toyota factory rep inspecting my truck before denying it because "dirt in the paint" and later on I found out she wasn't the factory rep just some random employee.

Cermic Coated probably doesn't help since it's the paint underneath falling off.

I don’t have any paint peeling but tons of spots where the paint has come off from little nicks, and turns to rust spots, mostly on my roof...

Update on my 2017 Super White Tacoma. Toyota Customer Care called me yesterday and they're going to take care of the problem, even though it's out of warranty. I guess it helped that I've probably owned 20 plus Toyota cars and trucks over the last 30 years. Thankfully I had entered all of them on the Toyota Owners site and I always have my oil changes done at Toyota. Now if they'll give me a loaner, I'll be set.

Great news! Curious, how do they repair this so it doesn’t happen again? Or do they only do area repairs? What if other areas that haven’t failed start to fail after initial repairs have been done?

So far my 5 month old Super White 2020 TRD sport has no issues. However, I did have some areas on the roof that I noticed when I hand washed the truck for the first time. It looked like the white paint was failing in a few spots and the grey primer was showing through. There were about 5 spots smaller than dimes that were grey. About the third time I hand washed I used a little more force on one of the grey spots and they rubbed off. So I was relived I was just something foreign on there and not flaking or failing paint.

I honestly don't know but the service manager said he will get me all the details once Toyota sends him everything. I told the CC rep that I hoped they would check everything to make sure the paint doesn't start coming off in other areas later on. Also told them I need a loaner, we'll see how that one goes. Regardless, I'm thankful they're taking care of it.

Update on mine: Toyota covered the paint job. Took almost two weeks for the deaker to get authorization. If you have this get it to your dealer and politely ask them to send a request to corporate with some pictures of the failing paint. Im over 1 year and 14,000 miles out of warranty and it was handled without a fight. Both rear doors and both front fenders were resprayed.

My 19 super white also had grey spots on the roof and hood. It turned out to be adhesive from when they removed the white protective shipping film and they didnt clean it off correctly.

2019 taco. Normal wear and tear or start of something bad?

I have one spot like that on my 2017 super white on rear driver door, but its stayed the same for roughly 2 years. I think its normal wear, but definitely keep an eye on and have the service center note it the next time you have it at the dealer.

That looks like a paint chip not paint failure. That one can/should be touched up with some isopropyl alcohol and a touch up pen. Had one or two in the same spot on my truck since its a high contact point area.

Just noticed this on my 2017 on the weekend. Called East Madison Toyota on Monday 5/17, service desk said they would talk to the service manager and get back to me. They didn't.
I called Smart Toyota (also in Madison, just further away from me) on Wed 5/19. They said bring it by their body shop, which is Ball Body Shop I did. Cim the manager there checked it out and wrote me a quote for $644 and said he would reach out to Toyota to see if they would cover it. He was aware of two service issues related to this, one being Toyota white paint peeling, the other being 3rd gen Tacomas peeling around the windows like this.
Ball Body shop just called and said Toyota was covering it and to bring it in on Monday to get painted.

Awesome! Can't wait to now have to deal with this when I get my new 2021 trd pro MT in June. FML

I had to go through this same thing with my 2005 trd sport MT 4 years ago in blue. The whole roof had clear coat coming off and the front of the hood had tons of chips from the highway. After the clear coat started to peel off the paint followed almost immediately and it started rust. Had to get the entire roof replaced, wasn't worth grinding off. They wouldn't do anything for it back then, and I had to get the entire truck repainted.

Great call on the manual, love my manual pro. To be honest that was a huge driver on how I ended up with the white truck because they only had three color options overall and even less options when it came to a manual. at the end of the day manual > color. However, not big on white vehicles personally and if I had my pick of the litter I would not have gone with white especially with all the issues listed. Personally, I would be all over lunar rock if I was getting a 2021. I will say this although most of the production practices are universal, the issues seem to be a lot of 2017 from the Mexico plant. The pros (and manuals overall I believe) all came from the SATX plant until the switch over takes place. Fingers crossed and knock on wood my paint looks great so far but I'm diligent with the care. It's garaged at night but parked outside at construction sites during the day. Good luck with your new purchase.

My year and month of build I guess fell on the final switch. Mine will indeed come from Mexico and I also wanted lunar rock, but white was my second pick not by much. I really think almost all manuals with lunar rocks are done for the year. Think white is the current one being built until the next round. It seems like toyota is taking care of the ones that have defects even out of warranty so far. Maybe they fixed the manufacturing after 2017... I would think they would have made some changes by 2021.

And I agree, manual is absolutely the only way to go. The gearing makes this engine more tolerable and you eliminate hunting for gears.

Yeah its kind of luck of the draw. I think they only produce manuals once a quarter and the distribution of colors among the regions isn't even either. I know its blasphemy on here but can say with confidence that if a Tacoma didn't come in manual that I would be driving something else. You should be fine as well as my 2018 that 3.5 years old at this point but its more the paranoia that it could happen unlike some of the other color options.
