I messaged PapaRee last Thursday night and received my tune pack in 5 minutes. First, how awesome is that?

I flashed the regular LT on Friday, as I had 87 in the tank, and was immediately impressed with it. I won't go into details, as pretty much everything I could say has already been said in this thread, and I echo it. Summary: it feels like the truck dropped about 1,000 lbs and someone slapped some sense into the transmission.

I ran through the tank on Saturday, filled with 93, and flashed the premium fullmuthafuggin throttle tune. Bliss. Yeah, it's a little touchy, especially off pavement, but my right foot can manage.

Great work, gentlemen. Great work.

I don't believe so? Maybe I missed it?

Will we be able to have different tip-in/tune files per drive mode in the future? Or will it rest on map switching via a button of sorts?

    Do you have VFtuner?

Quick question on the KDMax tune, I'm a bunch of tanks through it so far but will the start up from stop be less touchy over time or should I just get used to it. It's not terrible just very jumpy.

I had @MGMSang Taco install the KDMAX tune on my 2016 OR about a month or so ago here in Denver. He was great to work with and seemed like a cool dude. He was flexible and seemed knowledgeable about the tune and our trucks. I will add that his Taco is pretty bad ass!

I have been driving my truck around and getting a good feel for the new tune over that time. I have probably put somewhere in the neighborhood of 2000 miles on the truck with the new tune.

    Here are my impressions.

Out of the gate the truck was much more responsive. Tip into thd throttle and the truck just goes. No more tentatively adding throttle bit by bit just to get thd truck to move forward.

Acceleration is also much improved. I am not saying the truck is way faster, I am saying the truck acts more like it should when you are trying to havd it accelerate quickly and smoothly. Before, I would have to press the throttle more and more and then a little more in order for it to downshift and accelerate more rapidly. More often than not, with the old tune, when I did finally get the truck to downshift, it would drop 2 gears and take off like a scalded dog. Now, it is just much more predictable. I know what the truck is going to do and when, mostly. When I mash the skinny pedal halfway/three quarters way to the floor from a stop, ill get smooth, even, powerful Acceleration from the truck. What it should do.

The jury is still out on fuel economy. I will say it seems slightly better. My latest trip, Denver to Moab and back, running between 65 and 85mph (probably 70-75 most of the way). I averaged over 20mpg. That seems pretty darn impressive to me. On that trip I was running with the truck bed full of clothes and gear for fun in Moab plus my wife and our two kids. I was also running on 265/70-16s. Last trip I took (pre tune) from Mobile to Atlanta and back I was down at 16mpg running 80 most of the way. This trip was just me and my 500 KTM in the bed. I was also rolling 265/75-16s. So, those two trips might not help alot comparatively but they are data points. Around town, during my normal day to day, I believe I have seen pretty consistent numbers from pre-tune to now. If anything I would say I am seeing a slight improvement.

The transmission still sucks. I will say it is 85% better with KDMAX but I guess it is and always will be a dog. Don't get me wrong, the tune made it better. The truck now shifts where it should, mostly. I find that it actually carries gears a little longer than I would were I driving a manual. I don't really take issue with this. I actually prefer it to the other way around. It just means the power is there when you need it. My biggest complaint, at this point, (I do not believe this to be an issue with KDMAX) is the time it takes for the truck to drop a gear and take off. I find that in times of need, when I am looking for the most from my vehicle, the lag between mashing the pedal to the floor and having the truck sprint is so great it throws me off. Sliding the rear end of this vehicle takes more time and coordination than I am used to. I have to mash the skinny well in advance of the truck producing acceleration. Also, if I am trying to overtake, the seconds lost between smashing the pedal to the floor and having the truck actually go can mean the difference between cutting someone off or not. I will admit that I drive mostly manual transmissions but I do drive automatics on a regular basis as well. My wife has always owned autos and we usually take her car on the weekend. Other vehicles just don't seem to have this issue. (At least not this bad)

Overall, I say this is a very worthwhile upgrade. You are not going to beat the bang for the buck. Every day driveability is much improved. As far as the horsepower thing goes... I don't know, I guess it seems a little faster... I'd say thats not the reason for this tune though. (Sure, I guess it could be for you)

This tune kind of makes me wonder what the engineers over at Toyota are up to...

Anyway, hope this helps someone. And thanks to @PapaRee, @TWTaco and @MGMSangTaco

On my truck, it seems to have learned my driving and I have learned it. So, yes it is better over time.
If you want it lowered, there are different throttle settings to choose from. You can get a lower throttle setting flashed to your truck.
If you did it yourself, I sent you all the different files.

    Throttle Descriptions
    Auto transmission
    -------------------
    -Regular- Aggressive throttle
-LT- Reduced by 10% on gears 1-3, the rest same as Regular
-SLT- Reduced by 10% more on gears 1-3, the rest the same as Regular
-WifeTip- Very light, like stock throttle on gears 1-6

    Manual transmission
    -----------------------
    -XT- Aggressive throttle
-Regular- More throttle in all gears than stock, but lighter than XT

    KDMAX 6.0 tune
I finally got around to towing after the installation of the KDMax tune. I previously had a full size truck with a V8, so I was a little nervous about how the Taco would handle a long distance tow. Bottom line, I am very happy with the way it performed. I was towing a 6.5'x10' single axle trailer with two dual sport bikes (about 700 lbs) plus gear in the trailer and truck bed. We travelled from North Alabama to the Smokey Mountains in TN. Pretty flat in Alabama, then experienced a lot of elevation change getting closer to Tennessee. Very rarely did it downshift to 4th gear. Most of the time it worked well in 5th and 6th gear. Gas mileage took a big hit, but I expected that. I normally get 19-22 MPG depending on my city/hwy driving. During this trip, I only got 13.5 MPG, driving 60-75 MPH (depending on speed limits) up to Tennessee and 14.5 MPG back to Alabama. Overall, I am VERY happy with this tune and how it transformed my Tacoma!

Interestingly, fwiw my install of the slt seems to have gotten a little more touchy of the past few tanks. Either that or I have gotten less skillful.

Installed LT tune yesterday, drove from Atlanta to Nashville today. Taking off from a stop is touchy, but highway driving is much improved. I didn't notice any throttle hang today. MPGs don't appear to be negatively impacted, in fact I think they may have improved. Hard to say for sure, as I've only had my truck for about a month. Overall I'm very happy with the tune.

Just donated my ECU data to @Edge48 for the new ECU in the 2021. Hoping the guys can get to work on it for me. Just sold off my pedal commander and am driving a slug once again.
