Bought some stuff to finish setting up my Grandma's deer rifle for my wife.

My wife already has a nice 7mm-08 deer rifle, but I think she's going to like shooting this one better. (She's super stoked she's the one the rifle got handed down to)

Savage Model 99 in 250-3000 (250 Savage). It's circa post 1951, not a takedown or featherlight, so "value" is purely sentimental not collector.

It's a flat shooter with very limited recoil.

This is what we started with.


Partially disassembled it, to get to everything, and to bees wax the stock.





It was really actually very clean inside. We cleaned everything up and lightly swabbed everything with some protective oil. And put 4 coats of bees wax on the stock.



I have an old(er) Leupold Vari X III 3.5x10 that has been looking for a home... I think it'll really match well, here.

Ordered a Decelerator pad (stock is a steel but plate).



Should make this thing so nice to shoot.


Now I'm waiting on the scope mounts and some the last bits to finish this thing off.

I have a 300 Savage with the extended barrel. It's a tack driver.

 

And gasoline in the lawn sprinklers

 

I've never shot it (yet). My Grandma and Grandpa both said it was a very accurate rifle. My wife ought to really like shooting it, I'm just still deciding whether she should use it for actual hunting. The 250 has a much shorter effective range than her 7mm-08.

 

We've taken many many deer with ours. They're the OG deer rifle. But yeah, it's gonna be hard to compete with a modern rifle.

 

The 300 Savage has a lot more pop on the big end than a 250 Savage. I wouldn't even think twice about shooting a deer with 300 Savage, it's damn near the same as .308

What’s everyone’s thoughts on side charging AR uppers? Just ordered a Bear Creek Arsenal 7.5” .300AAC for a suppressed build. Just curious, thanks!

 

I think they are kind of neat in a novelty way. But I sometimes buy dumb guns so YMMV.

 

Yeah basically why I bought it, just something different and I got a screaming deal. If I hate it I’m sure I can always sell it.
