So, some of you may have seen my thread where I got stuck on a trail when I popped my front passenger half-shaft out of the tulip cup and destroyed my CV axle: https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/passenger-side-half-shaft-broke.722269/

I meant to tear it down last week, but I've been out of town since then.

The question is, do all of our trucks have the same axle nut style? Or was there a change somewhere in the model years? I have 2015 DCLB 4X4 auto, tow package.

I rounded up all the parts to replace it, and low and behold when I went to take the axle nut off, it was 36mm (~35.7mm measured with a caliper). AFAIK, all 2nd gens should have 35mm axle nuts--and unfortunately for me, I had a 35mm socket, but not a 36mm socket, so the new CV shaft will have to wait until tomorrow.

In addition to being 36mm, it's also a castellated nut and not the standard plain flanged nut+the castellated nut cap.

To me, this looks like a non-OEM replacement the PO did that used some funky nut size, but I wanted to confirm.

Let me know if anyone else has seen this.

You are correct in assuming that’s a replacement axle. I did a replacement a while back with a Napa axle and that’s the nut that came with the replacement. That would explain the failure you had.

edit: the axle was purchased at Napa but was labeled “FVP parts”.
