I’ve got a dealer telling me he can remove premium on “my” allocation. It that possible?

This makes me feel a lot better. Mine was accepted March 10th and a lot of folks on here getting their trucks and ordered after me. And I know everyone will be different, it still gets in your head. haha

There is a dealer employee that is active on the 'what are you paying for your 21'. The reason you have to enter a zip code into the toyota configuration website is so it knows what configurations are allocated to your area/region. Dealer may tell you 'yeah, no problem. We can build that for you.' But if it isn't something Toyota offers in your region your dealer is playing switcharooski &/or let's make a deal behind the scenes with the mother ship or another dealer for their allocation of a specific build.

Okay, I am just gathering info before I present it to my dealer with a lot of questions.

The truck I ordered.. well they had one and when I called about it it was already sold. Upon digging I found it was ordered that way by the buyer. So I told him to run it back. I am ordering a truck that they already had built prior. Does this change anything?

@cocephus what do you mean by "run it back"? Guessing, duplicate the previous truck for you? Purely speculative but I'd assume they could procure an identically spec'd truck for you seeing as how they had previously for another customer. That said, who's to say that customer's truck wasn't a dealer trade.

Dealer trades go something like: dealer A doesn't have an allocation for truck X but they do have an allocation for truck Y. Dealer A finds dealer B who has an allocation for truck X but might be interested in truck Y. The two dealers negotiate a trade and dealer A sells you truck X while truck Y goes to dealer B.

Also depends on demand of particular builds. A DCSB OR is going to have many more built (& thus higher allocation #s) than a DCLB OR w/ premium OR & tech.

Another way of thinking about it is those plastic puzzles that have say 16 spaces but only 15 pieces and you have the move pieces one at a time to eventually complete the picture. You may get lucky and one piece (your particular spec'd truck) is already in the right place (allocated to your dealer) or you may have to move pieces to get your truck to your dealer.

I got MGM for the color. I wonder if people who went for the Lunar Rock color had delays. I pretty much got every option and then some.

Would be some serious data to chew through but would be interesting to see it for location/region of allocation/request with the larger specs (cab/bed/grade, packages, color). Obviously the DCLBs are fewer than DCSBs but wonder where the ACs fall in the rankings (regardless of grade). As well as color by body & grade.

What do you mean by every option? Pro's come standard with every available option. Less the port installed add ones.

I ordered options not available to retail buyers that come directly from Toyota Corp (All add on accessories and packages).

"options not available to retail buyers that come directly from Toyota Corp"?

Can you please specify? What options you ordered that are not available to other retail buyers from Toyota?

Okay, got a response from dealer. He lined up with a lot being said in here, with a little more. Allocations can be adjusted except drive train and "few" other things. In my situation, the drive train is the issue, MT. Apparently they aren't making a lot of MT atm. So, he said they are building it from ground up, allocation is accepted by Toyota. Meaning they will make the truck when they decide to start on manual Sports. It seems from information online and him they are holding back on production. This is my opinion, but they have the chips, they are just saving them.

So yes, allocation date is important. But no, they aren't shopping around other dealerships (in all cases). They have the ability to order from factory to spec, there just needs to be a base model that is compatible for your specific requests (my imagination wonders if this would even matter in a normal market). So in essence everyone is right and wrong. Toyota told dealership, yes we will do this order, but can't tell you when.

Ahhh, not a lot of MTs are being made so that would definitely slow the process down. My first vehicle was a beater Isuzu pickup with a 5sp and man, what I'd give to have another manual but my desire for a 6' bed and need for a full back seat for three dogs precludes a MT. Wonder how many DCLBs in a 6sp they'd sell if it were offered? Not enough to warrant it or they would but one can long for it.

Okay went back to my build page. Looks like it was not packages but add ons like lights to bed, 3M film hood/bumper, and every accessory that was allowed (that did not overlap).

I could of sworn there was something different that the Toyota build page did not have.

I might've ordered one. My first truck was a 5 speed manual Dodge with a 318. I loved that truck. As it is, looking at the inventory spreadsheet that floats around here (the one from May 16th), about 11.5% of the Tacomas were DCLB. The popularity of short beds has always left me puzzled. They just don't appeal to me, and that's the reason I ruled out the Ranger and the Gladiator without even looking at them.
