2022 Tacoma Trail Edition 4×4

Based initially on SR5 4×4, Tacoma Trail Edition gets upfitted with a standard locking rear differential to offer added traction when it’s needed most in slow-speed four-wheel-drive situations. Reinforcing the fact that some of the most important parts are the ones you don’t see, the undercarriage skid plates are borrowed from the TRD Off-Road grade to provide added protection.

 

Excuse me, but why in the Hell would you buy a truck that didn't perform to your expectations? Really want to know.

 

I missed that....last year didnt have it. Made me feel like the Trail was overpriced. In that case it might actually be worth it over the regular OR. Be interesting to see what the pricing difference amounts to when they hit the lots.

This is a legit question and I'm happy to answer.

Every vehicle on the market right now isn't perfect for what I want/need and the performance issues can be overcome with a tune. Way easier than fixing the limitations of all the other vehicles I'm considering. And, given that the Tacoma is prevalent, maybe I'm overhyping the issues in my head based on what I've heard.

Question back to you: If you have a Tacoma with a 3.5 and auto, are you happy with the performance? Doesn't seem to hunt for gears on the highway?

 

Yup. Patiently waiting for pricing, availability and bed length info. But for real, I hope to be the first one in line for this thing.

FWIW, I fully expect this to slot in between TRD Off-Road and Pro, so around $40k.

 

You can criticize Toyota all you want. We on TW do all the time. I’m just saying pedal commander won’t solve your issues. You would likely be happier with a different truck.

With the Tacoma you will get:

A rusty frame
Drum brakes
Lacklustre power
Uncomfortable seats
Etc etc etc......

and a host of other things people rightfully complain about here on TW, who actually own these trucks. If you are complaining before your buy the truck, it doesn’t bode well for you. Stick with Ford.

 

It will depend on price. Should be fun to compare all the prices, packages and options for 2022.

I hope they start the 2022 year before September. Piss off the Bronco owners who are delayed.

 

I'd be sticking with Toyota, not Ford. I currently have a 2009 Tacoma TRD Off-Road so I'm familiar with the frame and drum brakes. Lackluster power can be fixed with a tune (OVTune) and I find the seats just fine. And some say it's been relatively fixed for 2020 and beyond with the stock tune.

I'm simply expressing my impression from my test drive and asking advice. Thanks for yours.

 

Recommend you drive your 2022 5k miles before doing any mods to fix the engine/tranny. My 2021 needs nothing. No hunting like my 2017.

Good advice, I've seen people say similar things about the recent Toyota stock tunes. Altitude does make a difference but I will def give it a fair shake before I throw money at a problem!

 

The tech in the Taco's is anything but modern IMO.

Interesting they are still advertising the transmission cooler, wasn't that removed in 2020?

 

Having just leased my 2021 TRD-Offroad, none of the news today gives me any real buyer's remorse.

That said if I get a couple of years into this lease, and the deal is right, I can see myself upgrading But I'm happy to enjoy what I've got otherwise.

I love the 5 foot bed. You are very critical. Just say you would prefer the 6 foot bed. That's fine. The short bed is better for some applications.

 

That's fair. But there have been more than a couple dozen times when I've had something in my 6' bed and was so glad I opted for that bed length because it JUST barely fit. And I like the longer look better, even if it's worse for off road, which is why I fear the trail will get the 5' bed only and no 6' option.

This package with the turbo or hybrid in a few years might be worth the upgrade.
